Will be visiting and staying in London for a week starting the day after Christmas. Any suggestions for a day trip out of London? We've previously been to Oxford, Windsor/Eton and Paris on side trips. Will be four of us, ages 18 to 55. We've done enough castles and cathedrals that we'd probably be more delighted with charm, shopping, pubs and other eateries, and maybe a little more shopping. Just read on this board about Disney Cafe at Harrod's. Will have to do that! London and Disney together.....Now that's our idea of culture!

Will you be doing the Harry potter studio tour whilst your here? York is very nice if your looking for a day away from London lovely shops in a nice town and good bars. Or Liverpool ?

I looked into the Harry Potter studio tour, but must have pondered too long because there were no bookings available during our stay when I tried to buy tickets. I've read about York, but not been there (my son has been to Liverpool), so we will move that up to the top of the list. Thanks for your thoughts!

If you are looking for somewhere not too far out of London then I do know an excellent pub:) Its the Royal Standard of England, its the oldest pub in England. Fantastic food, beautiful old place.

The mainline station is Beaconsfield if you are not driving and you will need to catch a taxi from there as its a long way down a very narrow lane, but its not far by taxi. Not too far away is Beaconsfield village which is very quaint. We took our American friends there a couple of years ago now and they liked it.

Then there is always a day trip to Salisbury or Winchester with some nice shops oh and a cathedral or two! Both are easy reach from London..
If you go to Winchester you can also take in the Watercress Line steam railway..

I'll try and think of more....personally I'd go for the pub:rotfl:

Have you been to Stratford-upon-Avon? Very popular with tourists due to its association with Shakespeare. Its a beautiful town and easy to get to by train for a day trip.
