I have a "friend" who wants to surprise their kids with their DVC purchase, probably at Christmas.
Have any of you done this?
Any ideas that wouldn't be too costly?
Since this is such a big purchase they want to maximize the "investment" by using part of their Christmas budget to help with the costs. They were thinking of wrapping up a picture of the home resort or a resort pin to announce the membership, but weren't sure if the kids would be excited by that. The kids are between 6-14.
My friend will appreciate it!

Will the kids even fully understand or care what a membership is?

How about getting some of those single share certificate of Disney Stock and giving one of those to each?

We made a puzzle for our boys to do. The oldest boys definitely got it, the younger not so much - we had to explain to them that it meant we would continue going to WDW on a regular basis. Will they have a vacation already booked? You could add that to the puzzle if so and maybe pick up some pins for them to trade (a standard Christmas present in our house) on their next trip. We've also bought our boys books on WDW. Their favorite is the HM book. We have so much fun with that one on every trip.

Maybe it's just me, but a DVC contract is an odd thing to give young children as a Christmas gift. A Disney trip I get...you give the kids tickets and some Disney stuff and sometime in the near future they get to experience their gift. Has your friend's family been to Disney recently? If not, this might be an option - your friend can then also share with the kids that they are not only getting a Disney trip soon, they will have the opportunity to go to Disney every year. I don't see any problem using some of the Christmas money for DVC, but I would just explain to my kids that gifts will not be as expensive this year due to family budget.

My kids never really understood our membership they just know we can go to WDW with it. Now my 13 year old is asking more questions and seems to grasp the concept. Maybe just book something with your new points and surprise them with a trip rather than the membership. Or include not only is there this trip...but many many future trips because you joined DVC!

Yes, the older two do for sure. We have been considering it for years and never saw the value in it until BLT was offered. The Contemporary and the monorails are some of their favorite things about Disney. They know what DVC is and they know we took the tour on our last trip.

There is a trip planned for spring with a stay at the resort, that is part of the surprise.
They will be receiving other gifts, probably 6 or so instead of 9 or 10, so this is definitely not their only gift.

I think the home resort pins would be great. My kids love DVC pins. Maybe you could make them DVC T Shirts or something too!! Some of the DISigners have made me wonderful DVC related items in the past. They could probably design something for you. On my welcome home wednesday thread someone offered me their red DVC baseball hats. Maybe they would be kind of enough to pass them along to you for your kids!
