Suggestions for lodging for family of six

Hi everyone.

I'm suddenly planning a trip to Disneyland and am looking for advice.

Last year we were five people (two adults, three kids) and booked a package through Disney and ended up at the GCH with one room that had bunk beds and a trundle bed for the three kids. Worked out great, and wasn't all that horribly expensive, as the other options involved two rooms.

This year we are six people (three adults, three kids i.e. bringing grandma) and that kind of changes the equation completely as far as lodging, I think.

We are not committed to staying in a Disney property, but we do need to be at a very walkable distance, probably no farther than Paradise Pier or so.

I'd love any impressions, suggestions, or opinions about where we should stay, and why. I suspect that a suite will probably be the least expensive option, but don't know anything about the suite options, especially at the off site hotels.

I should add that we definitely like pool time in the afternoon, when the parks get really crowded, and with kids 6, 9 and 12, a good pool is pretty important.

We will be there arriving the evening of Sunday July 8th and leaving most likely the morning of Friday July 13th, if that has any impact on your recommendation.

I might add that our trip last year, my first in 38 years (LOL, I was 5 then), went super smooth, even when it was crowded, thanks to some of the posts here... we knew how to use Magic Mornings, including a great sequence to use in Fantasyland; we knew how to use FP, including how to collect them and reuse them, and how to park hop; we knew about White Water Snacks; the list goes on and on. Super super super super helpful!

Thanks so much for any and all lodging suggestions!

There are hotels along Harbor Blvd that would provide a walk to DLR similar in length (if not shorter) than PPH.
Howard Johnson
Fairfield Inn
BWPPI
...to name a few.
I know HOJO has suites with bunk beds.

When there are 6 of us we like the RI Maingate suites. It has an ART stop, great breakfast and managers specials at night, free grocery shopping. It is not the GrandCalifornian but it meets our needs when we go over 5 travelers.

I agree with Blackjackdelta. We have stay at the Ramada Maingate several times and they have a room in the back that has 3 queen beds. They also have a great pool.

Thanks for that suggestion, and I'll remember it for next time, but that particular hotel seems to be completely sold out for our dates :-(

More suggestions would be great!

Park Vue Inn and Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites both offer suites. Both are very close to the parks.

We prefer the Residence Inn Maingate also. They have a hot breakfast, and the ART stop is very convenient. It is also nice that there are 3 stops to choose from. (Route 2, 7, and 8.) And the free grocery shopping is always a plus. I love giving them a list in the morning, and they have it all put away when we get back from the park!

My favorite offsite suite hotel is Residence Inn Maingate on Clementine. I've visited just about all the Good Neighbor hotels, and this one has the nicest accommodations, grounds, dining area, etc. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the park entrance.

If you want something right across the street, try Camelot Inn (has an elevated pool, which is nice), or Tropicana Inn - they have 1 bedroom suites there that sleep six people, and they offer a simple continental breakfast. They are also near decent eateries - Mimi's Cafe, Millie's Diner, etc.

This may be only slightly related to the original thread topic, but to be honest at the moment I'm trying to figure out how to make the Disney hotels remotely affordable. I suspect there'll be MM for DCA during the period when we'll be there and wouldn't want to miss out.

Do the Disney hotels offer a senior discount? (My mom will be traveling with us.)

Maybe an AAA discount?

Are either of these better than booking through Costco?

Also, if going with a Disney hotel, are there any particular advantages to booking hotel separate from DL tickets? I understand that the cancellation policy is more liberal for the hotel, but booking them together seems to have some interesting random perks.

Thanks so much for any further insight.

Your best bet, rramstad is to do a comparison. You can try www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com, AAA, and Costco, and see which comes out best for you. Dreams Unlimited Travel also books through the Walt Disney Travel Company, so they can check for senior, military, AP, etc., discounts for you.

If Mom is over 60, she can make the reservations for a 30% discount, I do it all the time, makes the trip a bit more affordable. No discounts on suites!! We always book separately now, we have done the packages before but the last few years we never did realize any savings, but it is all in what you are looking for.

Embassy Suites South is a hidden gem! I can't say enough good things about it. We travel as a family of 5, and pay $125 for aaa rate or better. You get a full on breakfast every morning, seriously, warm and cooked to order it's insane how much food is supplied. Also, the evenings include a managers reception which includes beer wine or cocktails for free! We take a shuttle to get to Disney and it comes every 15 minutes in front of the hotel. You are across from target in case you need anything and there's a Starbucks at the marriott next door. Also, it has a bucca do beppo in the same parking lot which we eat at on our last night after Disney. Enjoy your trip!
