We have been to WDW at least once a year for the past 11 years(and are going again later this month) but I haven't been to DL in over 30 years and DH has never been. We are so excited because DH needs to go on business to CA in late July and we will be able to spend a couple days in Anaheim. We are planning on going to DL, but not CA. Our kids are 8 and 6 and we are looking for ideas for hotels in the area since we are clueless. We usually stay at one of the moderate resorts at WDW, but would be happy at a neighbor hotel at DL since we are looking at staying under $150/night. Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA:)

We stay right across the street from DL at the Carousel Inn. Nice rooms, but I would say not as nice as a moderate at WDW. (we stayed recently at POR). BW Park Place Inn is in the same area and I have heard good things. We also have stayed at Hojo, a little bit longer walk.

IF you can get good rates, check with the Disney resort, I think Paradise Pier is the least expensive.

Why are you not going to CA? There are some great things for the 6 to 8 yo crowd and the Aladdin show is the best!!

Have fun.

I like the Candy Cane Inn www.candycaneinn.net

You're within walking distance, but there's a dedicated shuttle that runs every half hour if you're too tired.

The rooms are really nice, with comfy beds. The grounds are lovely, there's plenty of parking, and a very good continental breakfast.

With a 6 and 8 year old in July, I would think that the pool would be important. HoJo Anaheim has the best pool areas of all the off-site hotels, so that would be my pick:

You can get a mousesavers rate off (10%) if you ask:

I would not skip California Adventure! Your two day ticket will automatically be a park hopper anyway. And park hopping at DL is really not hopping but rather a two minute walk from one turnstile to the other. If you walk slow! DCA has some great rides that your kids would love. Its always less crowded than Disneyland and you can hold fastpasses for both parks at the same time. I like to start my day out at opening at DL, then just before lunch, go over to DCA (but I fastpass something for DL before I leave). Then after some time at DCA I can head back to DL. DCA has the Electrical Parade which is a classic and the Aladdin Show which is the best show I have seen at either DL or WDW. You could see Remember (fireworks) at DL one night, and the Electrical Parade at DCA another. If all you do at DCA is the Aladdin show, the Electrical Parade, Soarin, Grizzly River Run, Monsters Inc., and CA Screamin, you will not be sorry. And except for Soarin, all of those are DCA only rides and attractions. If you have any Pixar fans, the Block Party Bash parade is another thing not to miss. Please give it a try!

I second either the Tropicana or the Hojo. I have stayed at both, I love the Tropicana for its closer location (but the Hojo is still very close) but that pool at the Hojo is very nice. Just remember, the places near DL are older (but nicely kept up) motels. They may cost the same as a WDW moderate but they are not like that at all. If you go prepared to have a nice, motel that is sometimes as little as a two minute walk to the parks you will be fine.

Have fun on both of your Disney trips!

My Favs: Dirt cheap: Alpine, Moderate: HoJo's or Candycane, Expensive: DH or GC. Didn't like: Porto-fino. Hate: Jolly Roger. I've stayed at a lot of others and had varying degrees of sucess these are all my most recent. I love being on-site though.

This is our list, and we usually go on who has the best price and availability.

Best Western Park Place and Best Western Anaheim Inn
HoJo- mousesavers usually has a rate code for them
Tropicanna
DLH if their is an AP discount or a deal through expedia (Buy 3ntes get 4th free)
Ramada Inn Maingate (usu. if all others are booked or more expensive)

Last resort choice:
Desert Inn and Suites (can usu get a decent price but their quality is going downhill fast)

I ahve heard good things about Carousel and Candy Cane Inns.

try out the homewood suites off of harbor blvd. There is a free breakfast buffet every day and free dinner on weekdays. There is a strarbucks right next door, and an outback steakhouse, red robin, and joes crab shack in the parking lot. There is a shuttle to disneyland as well, and the rooms are very nice, with a full size refrigerator, two burner stove, and a microwave. You can even see the tower of terror from the windows.

I personally like Anaheim Plaza Hotel. Both kids would get free meals. Big pool. Large rooms. Micro and Fridge in every room. Very close, right across Harbor. Can typically get rooms for around $75-100 per night, and can get family suites for right around $150-200, which is nice.

Carousel Inn and Tropicana both good, CI has bigger rooms better breakfast, Tropicana has better pool. Both are only 5 minute walk and closer than any of the resort hotels. Heard good reports about HoJos and mixed reports on Candy Cane. If money no object then Grand Californian seems the best of the resort hotels and the nearest.

We have stayed at DLH and HOJO. Enjoyed both. DLH for the disney magic and the great pool and grounds, HOJO because it was sooooo much cheaper, the walk was about the same. Loved the pool at HOJO and the grounds are nice. Food cheaper off site also. We are going back in december and unless there is a great deal at DLH we will stay at HOJO again.

I agree with another poster about not skipping DCA. My DDs, when they were 8 and 6, really enjoyed DCA. Also, for whatever reason, DCA is never as crowded as DL, so we would hop over to DCA when DL got way too crowded to be enjoyable. We also enjoyed watching the Electric Parade at DCA, always one of the highlights of our trips.

We like staying at the Hyatt Orange County. There's a free shuttle to take you to the parks, plus a Target adjacent to the hotel so you can buy water bottles/snacks/breakfast.

I've heard good things about the Doubletree Guest Suites, the Embassy Suites, and HoJos.
