Suggestions for 1st grade girl?

We really like the "Fancy Nancy" books. We have some of the picture books which I read as well as some of the leveled readers which DD reads. I have a bit of a reluctant reader and she finds Fancy Nancy funny and engaging.

My DD (almost 7) is reading these Fairy books. It's a whole series...the one she just finished was Lauren the Puppy Fairy. Most of the others had a jewel in the name...like Dottie the Diamond Fairy (not the actual book name, but you get the idea). She's at school (with her book) so I'm not sure of the author's name.

The author's name is Daisy Meadows (I know, really!). And she has a TON of series out with these Fairies. IE-Sports Fairies, Animal Fairies, Jewel Fairies, Month Fairies, Days of the Week Fairies, Music, Dance, etc. DD6 loves them all, we check each series out of the library whenever we go. Also, anything Magic Treehouse. Hope that helps!

My DD6 loves these books, too! It’s the Rainbow Magic series by Daisy Meadows. They are all about fairies, but broken into different themed sets, with about 7 books in each set. So there are the Pet Fairies, the Weather Fairies, the Dance Fairies, etc. It’s one of those series that seems to come out with a new book everytime you turn around, so as soon as DD finishes one, she starts right up with a new one!

Whoops, didn't read all of the posts before I posted. So, yeah, what she said! LOL

And I don't think of these books as "dessert" as another poster said. DD6 reads at a 3rd grade level and likes these and Harry Potter equally well.
:-D

Make me a Whoops too! I saw the first few posts and replied before reading all the posts.

The Rainbow Magic Fairy series is a huge hit with my 1st grade DD and her friends right now. There are several different series all under the Rainbow Magic name by the same author Daisy Meadows. The ones that the OP's daughter would love is the Pet Fairies series. There are seven fairies each with a different pet (guinea pig, bunny, kitten, puppy, fish, and a couple more I can'r remember. The other series has different rainbow color fairies, different weather fairies, different jewel fairies, and different dance fairies.

These books are great for kids at this age who are switching from picture books to chapter books.

My 7 yo loves the Geronimo Stillton books. They are mysteries about a mouse family. She's ready at least 15-20 of them so far. She also likes Graphic Novels since her older sister does too, so we had to look hard to find some that were her reading level and finally found the Baby Mouse series. We have a hard time finding them at school or the public library, so when we find one she hadn't read we feel pretty lucky!

My daughters liked the books that're mentioned here, but another HUGE favorite -- which includes animals, one of your requests -- was the Warriors series. Author Erin Hunter?

It's about a KittyPet named Rusty who loves to go out into the woods behind his house. He meets a wild cat, an Apprentice Warrior, who invites him to become a part of his world. Rusy leaves his TwoLegs and moves into the forest, where he has many adventures. He finds friends and enemies and works hard to make himself worthy of being a Warrior.

My youngest daughter LOVED this series, and back when she wasn't yet a strong reader, we used to take turns reading chapters to one another.

Be sure that you start with The Warriors, not The Warriors, The New Prophecy. And do read them in order. The story builds. I think the first one was called "Into the Wild" or something like that.

My kids love, Big Chickens. There are 3 books about Big Chickens. They are so funny! They are about chickens that run amok and find adventure and calamity. Great read aloud books!

Two more favorites are:The Empty Pot which is about honesty and courage. It has a rather surprising ending. And Ish has several messages, but the overriding message is words are powerful. (We like The Dot, too, by the same author. But we like Ish the best.)

My dd6 has read all the "Stink" books--he's the younger brother in the Judy Moody series. She has read every Rainbow Magic book she can get her hands on. She also loves the Mr. Putter and Tabby series, although they're below her reading level, but they are really cute introductory chapter books--I enjoy reading those with her. She also enjoys Geronimo Stilton books--they're all color drawings which are fun.

That's the point, Your daughter reads other books like Harry Potter, books that take longer and let the plot develop slowly. I don't see a problem with the books when mixed with others but alone they can really cause issues later on. I work with kids and I have run in to so many troubles with this, when all they read are those type of books they have a harder time with more complex stories as they get older, they expect everything to happen really fast. So by desert I just meant you can't just have them you have to mix others in too.

My 1st Grade DD loves the Ivy and Bean books. There are only 6 so far and she can't wait until there are more.
