Trying to find some ideas for Christmas for a 15 and 12 year old for Christmas. Thought a monthly makeup box subscription would be fun.

Would love to hear experiences on different ones, when is the first one delivered etc

I have done several. I love Sephora Play (which also earns you "points" in their preferred customer system) - $10 a month and you always get that back in value, as some of the stuff is quite expensive. Sephora play sends a ton of different boxes - my friend and I have never gotten the same items - but here is what a sample box might look like: http://www.mysubscriptionaddiction....ephora-august-2017-box-197-full-spoilers.html.

If you are spending more, I would suggest Boxycharm bc they send full sized items. It costs $21/month. Here is a spoiler for next month in case you are curious what a box looks like: https://www.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/2017/09/boxycharm-september-2017-full-spoilers.html.

Birchbox can be hit or miss in my opinion, but usually is worth the $10. If you are willing to wait, they usually do a pretty good Black Friday deal.

I love my ipsy box and I'm thinking about getting it for my 18 yo dd. I just looked at the boxy charm one linked above though and wow! That is an amazing value. She could share with friends in her dorm too.

I have a 13 yo dd as well. She would love a box but if I do something for her, I'd like to find something with more spa type items. She has and wears makeup but some of the looks in the boxes I've tried are just too old for her.

Yeah, boxycharm is pretty great. I can't justify $21 a month for myself as a regular expense, but it would be great for someone starting out (or if people shared with others).

Ipsy, both times I signed up my girls, there was a waiting list of a few months.

I love ipsy and Birchbox. Ipsy is geared towards makeup and I feel like Birchbox is more towards skincare and haircare.

I've subscribed (and cancelled) Ipsy and Birchbox, because after a while we kept getting the same type products that my teen didn't use. Too many face masks and creams, not enough interesting make up. They were both good for a while--maybe a 6 months or a year, and then we stopped. Plus with Ipsy, we are now over run with makeup bags--and I use them for all kinds of storage.

I just signed both of us up for WalMart's Beauty Box. It's only $5 a month. I got mine (Classic Box) and wasn't too impressed--a bunch of travel size shampoo/deodorant/body wash. My daughter hasn't got her first one yet, but should be different from mine.

We also get Target Beauty Box occasionally, but that's not a subscription.

good to know- I was hoping for more make up for them to try as opposed to masks and creams

Teens love Ipsy. I have had other subscription boxes and Ipsy is the only one we currently have active. I would say for a teen, Ipsy is the way to go. It is hit or miss now that we have been receiving it for about 18 months. Two months ago, DD14 said to canx it cause the stuff wasn't good anymore, then last month she liked what she got. It's just hit or miss each month.

My daughter get Sephora Play and Boxy Charm. We were on a wait list for about 6 months for Sephora play. Sephora play is more sample sizes. Boxy charm you get a lot of full size and brushes.

My daughter LOVES her Ipsy box. It's only $10 and they send items based on a questionnaire sent to the recipient. My DD was getting too much of one thing and went in and changed her answers and started getting other things instead.

My niece gets Ipsy, she loves make-up, hair, creams, mask, lotions, lip gloss, shampoo...whatever, the questionnaire is important, and she changes it a lot, if she starts getting to much of one thing.

I give her a Ulta GC for Christmas and her birthday and she goes crazy over it... 50 for each occasion.

My sister in law says she is very careful on spending the Ulta cards, and between the Ipsy and the GC they don't have to buy anything but the basic for her now.

I considered doing this last year for DD16, but didn't. Still on the fence whether it is better to save the $10/month for makeup she chooses at the store, or to get the surprises. Is there a way to give Ipsy as a gift for Christmas, but have her fill out the questionnaire herself?

I did this (except for Hanukkah). I printed out the Ipsy logo and put it in a wrapped box. She filled out the questionnaire that day and received her first package in January.

I have tried and cancelled many different beauty boxes, Ipsy is the only one I've stuck with, they send me the most items relevant to my life that I will actually use.
I also do the $5 WalMart Quarterly.

I've tried Birchbox, Beauty Army, Ipsy, Target Beauty Box, and Allure. There were several times I got the same item in a different brand boxes, in the same month. For example, I got the exact same mascara from Birchbox & Beauty Army, in the same month, ugh...

You really have to do the profile questions and reviews. I know on Ipsy, they review your reviews every few months, so if you're not liking certain shades, or don't care to get nail polish and would rather have eyeliners, you have to set it up in your profile. I would re-do my profiles every few months to change up my boxes. After 6-18 boxes I cancelled all but Ipsy. Birchbox was first to go, I was getting tiny little samples like you'd get in a magazine.
