Sugar Free Dining at Universal

Hello! We'll be spending some time at Universal soon and my daughter is on a strict no sugar diet. As in, no chicken marinaded in sugar, no hamburgers that have sugar mixed in the patties (yes it happens), no salad dressing with sugar. I was wondering if anyone has researched this before; haven't found anything online yet except for sugar free dessert options, which isn't really what we are wanting.

If anyone has looked into this please let me know! Thank you! She's gluten free too, but I think we have that covered. Mainly looking for hidden sugars in the usual gluten free foods (grilled chicken, bunless burger, stuff like that).

Is she following a keto based diet? I have been eating keto (for weight loss, not medical reasons. 20g carb max/day) for a just over a year now. When are you going? We arrive July 17th so I'll have some answers for you then.

I've been looking at the menus in this thread. Rotisserie chicken seems widely available and probably the best chicken option (I don't eat hamburg).

Not keto necessarily, but no sugar and no starches, and she has a gluten sensitivity. So yes, limited carbs. She'll be sticking to meat and salads, but I just wonder about sugar marinades and sauces in the meat. I know many rotisserie chickens have sugar marinade. We will be there before you...July 10, so maybe I should report back!

Interestingly, I just got info from Cedar Point (here at home in Ohio) they emailed me ingredient lists for all of their main foods, like the grilled chicken breasts, the burgers, hot dogs, etc. I am going to see if Universal and Disney have something like this. Stay tuned...

I was able to find Dining Services emails online for both Disney World and Universal Studios. I received a personal reply fromUniversal; the Universal Chef gave me his phone number and also a listing of the full service restaurants where the chef would come out and make suggestions based on our restrictions. He also gave me a run down of some of the food items that are GF and sugar free and where to get them! The turkey legs on carts are plain smoked FYI as well as the chicken and ribs.

Disney sent a general email but it was very comprehensive. It included this:
"Most restaurants offer no sugar added, low fat, low sodium, vegetarian or vegan options. Advance arrangements are not necessary for Guests with these dietary requests. Guests can discuss this with their server upon arrival at the restaurant." They can add sugar sensitivities to reservations, I did this by calling the dining reservation number.

Malela, are you asking about Disney or Universal? Sugar free, gluten free, or both? I have a lot more info in the files they emailed than what I summarized here...

Can you cut and paste the list of the sugar free from Universal? Thanks!

Universal Dietary Info:
Dietary Restrictions
Universal Orlando restaurants work very hard to accommodate guests’ special dietary needs. If properly informed, Universal's chefs can prepare food that is vegetarian or vegan, kosher or halal, dairy-free, gluten-free, or nut-free. When you make a dining reservation, either online at opentable.com or by phone (407-224-3463 for restaurants in the parks and CityWalk; 407-503-DINE for hotel dining), you’ll be asked about food allergies and the like. The host or hostess and your server will also ask about this and send the chef out to discuss the menu; if you’re not asked, just talk to your server when you’re seated.

At counter-service restaurants, ask to see the menu book with ingredient and allergen info. Unfortunately, one place that does not get high marks for dietary accommodation is the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. There is virtually nothing on the menu that's vegan, and not much more for the gluten-free or lactose intolerant. In general, those on restricted diets will find many more options at Universal's table service eateries.

Be aware, also, that Universal Orlando does not have separate kitchen facilities in which to prepare allergen-free foods, so there is always slight possibility of inadvertent allergen contamination before or during preparation. You are welcome to bring your own food into the resort, as long as you follow the restrictions on items permitted inside the parks (no glass containers, or large or hard coolers). If you are staying on-site, a refrigerator can be rented in rooms that do not provide one as standard for $15 per day.

For more information, e-mail your specific dietary requests to FoodServiceCUF@universalorlando.com.

From the email: (This later was replied to as "all of these items listed are sugar free" (Note that I believe that this is a listing of sugar free AND gluten free, which will be much more limited than just gluten free)

Hi, in Universal Studios. We have fruit stands in the parks with apples, oranges, grapes, watermelon on them. Also have turkey legs on carts that are just smoke plain. We have a full service unit it is Lombard's landing and Finnegan’s, We have a chef in each unit have the server bring the chef to the table and he can go over all the things he can do for you In Islands of Adventure we have 2 full service units one called Confisco's and one is Mytho's, We have Chefs in both of those units, have server bring Chef to table and he can go over the things he can do for you,. I have another walk up unit it is Thunder Falls, I have smoke chicken, smoke ribs, and roasted corn on cob and roasted potatoes with fresh herbs and salt and pepper, also have French fries all natural cooked in soy blend oil that is the only thing cooked in those fryers too. If you need any more information or help feel free to give me a call at 321-388-2123, Chef Bob. I will also say no desserts at all from any of the restaurants too. Thanks Chef Bob

We also offer gluten free pasta in the full service restaurants in both parks, there is a Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream shop in USF that has gluten free ice cream. We also have three broomsticks which have smoked chicken and smoked pork ribs, roasted corn on cob, baked potatoes, roasted potatoes with onions, garlic, salt and pepper, and fresh herbs and some salads too.

Thank you! Looks like the smoke chicken/ribs aren't coated, that's good to know.

I'm laughing about fruit being sugar free.

Right, but I specifically asked about added sugar. My daughter is allowed to have fruit. It is good to know about the chicken and ribs, and that sounds so good!
