Subway's Customer Service

I'd let it go. Are you mad that she wasn't friendly or that she was closing early or that she wouldn't tell you why she was closing early

I'd let it go....everyone has a bad day.

I have to say something like this wouldn't be on my list of things to complain about. Granted she may not have been the friendliest person out there but it doesn't sound like she was out right rude either.

Maybe I missed something but do you know for sure she was closing the store early? I would let it go but that's just me.

No, she wasn't closing the store early, and I wasn't the least bit upset that she had chairs up on the table and was putting them down when we walked in. I totally understand trying to get any clean-up chores done BEFORE closing, but it was the way she treated us and the way she talked to us when we found out she was open for OVER two hours yet.

Like I said before, if it was 10 minutes to closing time I could completely understand her wanting to close up and get out of there, totally understand that. But when she has 2 hours yet, she should be nicer to her customers.

I did feel she was rude to us, in the way she spoke to us and exactly what she said to us. There is another unfriendly worker there that I have never complained about. She always greets us, but never smiles, but she has never said anything rude to us so I wouldn't think of saying anything to a manager about her.

Just chalk it up to bad day.

Again, I would just let it go. I wouldn't be trying to get even the rudest employee in trouble right before Christmas. These are hard times for a lot of people, and I would just let it slide. In general I try to err on the side of mercy and understanding, but especially so at this time of year.

I'm not saying I'd never complain about a rude employee, but at this time of year unless she spit in my food, I would just let it go. It's not a hill to die on.

She had an attuide because she said "to long"?:confused3 Thats not rude, rude would of been her saying We are closing and all the food is put away. That's rude, you sound as if you are one of those hard to please people.

(bolding mine) So, your complaint is that she was not nice enough to you and your DH when she had 2 hours to go till closing, but that it would have been okay if she was closing in 10 minutes? That makes no sense.

She had probably had a very long day. Who knows how many hours she had been there that day and the being reminded that she still had another 2 hours to go probably didn't set her in a good mood. Heck, she may have been forced to stay and close because someone called out.

The hours posted on the door stated that they were open till 10pm and she didn't refuse you service, so I can't understand why you had to say to her "at least 2 more hours". Sounds a bit mean to me.

:confused3 Huh? Doesn't sound like she is "hard to please" to me. I'm surprised at how many people think it's acceptable for her to respond in the manner in which she did. I can understand that she wants to get out of there, but she signed on for a shift that ends at 10:00 p.m. that's what she should expect to work. Putting chairs up before 8 sends a message that you really don't expect nor want customers--not a very welcoming thing. She is in the service business--to state that they're open "too long" is rude--plain and simple. I think that's part of the problem with America--we are way too willing to settle for mediocrity and rudeness these days. We have lowered our standards to the point where anything is acceptable. Now I know in the scheme of things, this is not a big deal, but where do we draw the line?

I would report it.

No, I just don't think we should jump to conclusions about what happened. We have one side of the story. We don't know what was going on that night or what happened to the girl right before the OP entered the store. I have been a manager and you have to remember that these are people, not perfect robots. Poop happens and unless she was flat out rude (which I don't personally see in the post) then there really is no reason to make a huge issue out of it.

I have reacted like that in the past, I am sure. However, you don't have any clue WHY that was a reaction. She didn't refuse service and it sounds like she did her job. Maybe if the OP had been a bit more polite, instead of making a pretty rude off hand comment, the girl would have been perkier. Maybe if customers stop expecting employees to be perfect and never have a bad day, then things would be better.

I completely agree. We have no idea whether this girl "signed up" for this shift or not.

The OP was rude to this employee and then expected her to do a little smile and dance for her in return. Not gonna happen.

I have no problem reporting rude employees, but in this situation, we have no idea what the girl's side of the story is, or even how accurate the OP's side is. Not to mention it's flippin Christmas time. Things are tough for a lot of people this month, especially for people who may not have the best paying types of jobs. I have no idea what this girl is going through. Maybe her child is sick and she wants to get home to take care of him/her. We really have no idea what her story is. And, on top of that, it really doesn't sound like she did anything wrong. I really don't feel like "Too long" is an offensive answer. I probably would have chuckled and said something like "I know what you mean, I had a really long day too. I hope it gets better for you".

I agree that we don't need to just settle for mediocrity, but I'm also sick of this new age of everyone being offended/irritated by every single little thing. The OP sounds like she was kind of scroogey to this girl in the first place. Was it really necessary to say "It looks like more than 2 hours"? That's kind of snarky. And then to expect cheeriness in return? Seems like the OP was rude.

So, she is not allowed to do any of her closing duties, such as sweeping and mopping the floor, till 10pm? This is a small store with 1 employee working. I can imagine that they do not get many customers from 8 till 10 pm. It is very common for the employee to get their closing duties done when they can. As long as she didn't refuse her service, or close the store down early, the she did NOTHING wrong.

I see nothing wrong with the "too long" comment. She had probably had a very long day, was exhausted, had a ton of work to do and the thought that she still had 2 hours to go was not something she wanted to think about let alone have it thrown in her face by a customer. So, at that point in time, working 2 more hours probably was "too long" for her.

Interesting take on things......

Of course, everyone has bad days. I have them myself at times.;) I am expected, however, to put that aside and do my job whatever that takes. I realize it is "only a Subway" job but a job nonetheless. I don't expect perfection at all, but I truly don't think common courtesy is too much to ask. This girl didn't seem courteous from what we've read. How her day went really has no bearing on how she should treat her customers. We can agree to disagree.

FTR, my college DD is a hostess at an extremely busy and popular restaurant in our town. She takes a LOT of abuse and is the target of many customers' anger and frustration for having to wait (sometimes up to 2 hours), but she signed up for it and realizes it's part of the job. Does she deserve it? Of course not. Does she have bad days and want to tell people to shove it? Yep. But she knows she can't--she sucks it up. Maybe this is not the best analogy to the OP's story, but to me it's all about being professional--regardless of what your job is.

No, I'm really not that hard to please. I guess you "had to have been there" to hear the tone she used with us. And in my comment of "more than 2 hours yet", it was more of a question, as we were trying to clarify if they were going to be open until 10 p.m. as stated on the door, or if she was closing up early for some reason.

I'm normally not a confrontational person at all, and will let many, many things slide. I had to work up the nerve to ask her what her name was.

Again, I felt that with 2 hours left of her shift she should have not used the rude tone with us that she did.

I just don't feel like she did anything unprofessional. Her job is to make sandwiches. She made her a sandwich. As for the too long comment, she probably thought the OP would be a nice person and commiserate with her. We all know what it is like to have a long day. :confused3

I tend to let things go especially food workers. These people have hard jobs and very little appreciation.

Yes, she was snippy and not smiling and friendly but really do you go to subway for the people working there? Bad days happen to everyone.

We ordered there one and it was once in a lifetime.
What a crappy disgusting food. It looked like dog food and my dog wouldn't even eat that sort of crap. Never, never again we will ever go there. We will starve before we spend a dime there.

Hmmm not sure how this applies to the topic.

But, yes, Subway's do seem to differ a lot from location to location. We have some here that are WONDERFUL, and some that are just gross. Luckily the one by our house is awesome!

I'd let it go. I wouldn't complain, she wasn't outright rude to you or refuse to make your food cause she was closing. Heck she was about as friendly as they ever are when I go into Subway.

I wouldn't make waves for some poor worker 2 weeks before Christmas.

I agree!

So basically what you're saying is that you want to report her for a rude tone of voice?

She didn't smile, and in response to the comment of being open for 2 more hours stated it was too long. While she doesn't seem overly friendly, I wouldn't consider that an attitude problem worth complaining about. Attitude can be very subjective and I didn't see anything in the conversation you listed to consider her rude or saying anything uncalled for. As far as the chairs up on the tables while she was sweeping or mopping - that doesn't even suggest that she was closing up. Just that she was cleaning the floor. Maybe it was messy or someone had spilled something and it's a lot easier to clean stuff like that with the chairs out of the way.
If it were me, I would just let it go.
