Right now we have a lady who works for the school district call us when a teacher is off. They want to go to a computer and eventually to a Kelly Service.
I'm not a sub but my neighbor works in the school office and thats who calls the subs in....they have a list and they pick a name from there and call....of course it is all done by favoritism....some of the subs give nice little gifts to the office worker that calls the list and of course they get called first...or like my friend who subs is friends with an office worker in one of the schools so she gets called first all the time....
Here each school has a sub locator (secretary who also finds subs). Often I get called directly from the teacher to book my services and they just let the sub locator know I will work.
We went to computers a couple of years ago and it isn't the greatest. It's really nice to be able to pick and choose a job on the internet but the schools were getting alot of subs that were sub-par (excuse the pun). On Friday, the school I was subbing in had a sub that fell asleep during second period in a classroom full of students. The teachers went wild. Can you imagine having that sort of replacement after working so hard to get your students motivated to do work? He was thrown out of the school and he'll be blocked from subbing at that school. How many other schools will it happen to before he's blocked from the district?
Our secretaries in our offices have now taken it upon themselves to call their reliable subs in advance when they know someone is out. I've gotten calls as late as 9:30 at night from a secretary because they had a staff member call to say that they were ill and would be out the next day. This isn't her job but the schools are trying to protect themselves from having indifferent/incompetent subs in their classrooms. The teacher should be putting it on the internet but their experiences have been so varied (and often bad) that they try to minimize internet use whenever they can.
We eliminated a few jobs in order to implement this system. The district didn't want to pay benefits. All it has done is pushed work back into someone else's lap. The school's staff desperately wants capable people in their classrooms when they are out. It hasn't quite worked out that way and its a shame. I can only imagine what this system's final cost will be....
The vice principal calls me to sub. Since I only sub at DD's school he has me on a list with others like that. He just pulls the list out and starts calling. We are also in the computer system where he can go there and put in a request. The computer would call up early in the am and you would have to enter a # to accept or decline the job. It is much easier for him to call us then do that.
The teachers themself set it up with us ahead of time. If it's a last minute thing, the teachers call a lady at the county, who in turn calls the subs. The teachers even then can request that the lady call certain subs.
OUr county has a SIMS system that calls subs. It's an automated thing. It was so annoying and I was getting called for BAAAD schools so I took my number off the call list and I only sub at one school. The teachers all have my number so they just call me when they need me. It works great that way because they knwo who I am and I know who they are!
I get called by the computer. I only sub at one school, so I mostly have requests but they still go through the system. The teacher plugs in my phone number when they call for a sub and then the machine calls me. I don't mind it at all. Years ago when I first got out of college I subbed and was called by a person. I prefer the computer. People hold grudges when you turn down a job and stop calling!
When I subbed about 7 years ago they used _what they called_ SubFinder. Basically it started calling at 5am and you would put dial a certian # if you wanted the job or not if - if you did not want that job it would keep calling with different jobs until you took one or you said you did not want to work that day. This was/is gor a huge district 11 elementary schools 5 middle and 4 high schools.
Our county went to that system this year. Dh (teacher) hasn't had to use it yet.
Before SIMS, the teacher or the secretary would call. Dh liked that system, as he liked to hand-pick his subs.
I used to sub before we had children. I had a great set up! I worked nearly every day at the same elementary school. I was already there (working, or sometimes volunteering) and teachers who knew they would need a day off would find me and ask me to put their class in my schedule. My schedule stayed pretty full. I had two long term assignments, too.
I own a lawncare company and sub in the winter months.. I work mostly at two high schools, one with about 2000 kids and another with 700. In both cases the lady that works the ISS room is the sub caller..
