Hi to All!!

Am posting this on the Budget Board as well.

I have been a substitute teacher for the last 5 years and LOVE IT!! :sunny: The school district I work for has had a waiver with the State of Illinois allowing us to work as many days as we wanted (usually about 175 for me!!).

The waiver has expired and the state won't renew!! :faint:  Now I am limited to 90 days in any one school district. Yes, I can add on other school districts and play the juggling game. I am spoiled and would rather not.

So, I am turning to you looking for suggestions for supplemental income. Any ideas that are reliable?

Have heard about medical transcriptions. Anyone doing that? How did you get started - taking classes? How did you find the company you are with?

Any help is always appreciated. :upsidedow

Thanks and Have a Magical Disney Day!! ::MickeyMo

Have you thought about using your substitute teaching knowledge at say a Sylvan Learning Center or Kaplan SAT class?

Well, that is really silly of the school district, what happens in January or February when the staff is out with the flu and the subs have used up their hours, not real forward thinking if you ask me! The problem with finding another job is that you limit when you can sub. If you take a job on say Tuesdays and Thursdays, then they call you to sub on those days, you will have to say no. If you say no too many times, they won't call.

Are you able to work in the evenings? What about a job witnessing or a retail job (especially one that pays commission). I don't think the medical transcription route it all that lucrative. You have to take coursework and then hope you can get into a group to do the transcription.

Why on earth would the state do that? I'm sure the school district will be doing whatever they can to keep you! Maybe the problem will go away.

maybe you can become a private tutor.
But if push comes to shove and money was a motivating factor, I would do the district juggle.

Someone in the area recently told me that she has a good friend who is a notary. She does on-call work on the weekends and in the evenings--charging about $5 a document or a minimum of $15 depending on how far away the job is. The salary isn't extremely dependable, but it would be good for extra cash.

or...You could always go the home sales route.

I would first consider you for private tutoring. Good luck. Oh and great money in bartending and waitressing if you get in the right place. Sorry you are going through this! :guilty:

Thanks for all the information. I am not a certified teacher but I have a substitute teacher certificate (need a college degree for it). Don't know if I would be qualified for tutoring.

Does your district have homebound tutors? They are teachers, usually, that bring classwork to homebound students and help them go through whatever they need. I don't know if they would require you to be certified for this, our state does, but we also have to have a teaching license to sub. It is a different category then the regular subs, so they might be able to get you hours that way?
