Stupid stunt

have to say my hats off to you for putting to words my thoughts on this.

tpettie; not to generalize, but you are Canadian? Generally speaking I have found Canadians to be more considerate of others. I (mostly) love my country, but do wish we could return to some modicum of civility and respect for others.

As an aside; tragic case of the "look at me! Look at me! Look at me!" Syndrome gone horrifically too far--there was a case down here in the states of a father that left his 22 month old son in the car while he was at work. With 90F degree days, the interior of the car became an oven, and the poor child was cooked alive. (May he rest in God's arms) The father said he "forgot" and he was working. A tragic accident, etc.

Inexcusable under any circumstances, but in this case it turns out the father was posting lewd pictures of himself while "working"--and while his small son was suffering a terrible death.

"Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!" Yep. We see you. Keep posting, morons. Your electronic bread crumbs make a great chain of evidence. :cool2:

And if the friends were caught, what would they be charged with, exactly? Using their video camera while on a Disney boat?

They were complicit in the act and Disney can reprimand them (I.e. Ban them) accordingly.

If they were video taping because they knew what he was going to do, they they are party to the misconduct.

:thumbsup2 We're not talking about throwing them in jail. Pretty sure Disney can ban anyone they want for any reason as long as they're not just randomly discriminating.

Wow, I'm surprised Disney doesn't have an official police force. Cedar Point Police are real officers with the power to arrest people.

I think they do. I think a professor talked about it one day in one of my Criminal Justice classes, but that was like 14 yrs ago.

Conspiracy? Withholding information? IDK
It's not a "conspiracy" to be friends with the jumper, unless (as I've mentioned) they did something like opening a gate on the boat.

"Withholding information" is not a crime. Certainly not to Disney security (no obligation whatsoever there), and not even to police (there's that whole pesky Miranda rights thing).

"Complicit" means they aided him in some way. Being friends with him or even videoing him is not aiding.

Nope. Knowing in advance that someone might jump from the boat is not a crime.

Knowing what he *will* do requires psychic powers :rotfl2:

Guess he didn't know about the brain eating amoeba that lurks in the waters around Disney??? lol... you know, that is why they closed River Country afterall!!

Actually that incident happened in 1980. River Country closed after its regular season in 2001, 21 years later, and never reopened due to post-9/11 cutbacks that favored the newer, better-Imagineered water parks (TL and BB).

No, they don't have Disney police. To arrest someone, Disney security has to call county police.

They're really no different from the security at Target. Except that they're a lot faster, and seem to pop out of nowhere when they're needed. :)

For what it's worth, I'm on the top floor of the Boardwalk right now. I realize it's been 3 days since this 'stupid stunt' but I'm currently watching a helicopter circle over the same area of water that idiot jumped in to. This helicopter has been circling for about an hour and a half now (it's 12:50am). Maybe they found something? Maybe it's nothing. I was also part of that group that was leaving HS last Monday night when we were funneled to the buses.

Could the "friends" be charged with something if they dared the guy to jump in?

I keep checking back hoping they found him safe and sound and hopefully a bit wiser but the last post doesn't sound very promising.

Um, no. You can only detain someone you suspect of a crime. Once again, it is not a crime to merely know someone who did something illegal, nor is it a crime to video said person. It is also not a crime to "hide something" (i.e. knowledge) from Disney security.

Security (even Disney) cannot "hold someone for further questions" just because they might know the guy. That opens up Disney to a major lawsuit. Disney security can step in when a person is seen committing criminal behavior. But only that person can be detained, not his/her acquaintances.

I should have phrased it better, but they could be asked in a polite fashion if they minded sticking around for the cops since they are friends/witnesses. They of course can say no, and keep walking. Yes you can only detain someone you see commiting a serious crime, even then it is tricky becuase the laws in FL are a pain in the butt. In most cases it is all how you word things lol. Hey i need to you to stay here vs do you mind helping with the search, lawsuit vs helpful citizen. They would ask 2 or 3 questions, probably to determine mental state, and such, then likely send them on the way becuase.

Correct. Anyone (including a regular Disney CM; it doesn't have to be security, although it likely would be) can politely ask someone to stick around for the police, or to ask them further questions. But they have to be careful not to touch them or even ask them to relocate to a private space..

Detaining someone (as several PP think that Disney can do at will) is something else entirely. If the person you're detaining wasn't witnessed committing a crime, then that person can sue Disney for kidnapping. And Disney security knows this.

Pretty sure "daring" someone is not a chargeable offense. Neither is being stupid enough to take the dare.

Acting on the dare, that's what gets you in trouble. :rotfl:

I'd say the odds this kid made it out and is going to school today is a strong 95%.

I'll also lean about 20% that he is aware of this thread and is lurking.

OMG my friend and I helped that lady get fastpasses! She was taking out her phone to take a picture of the kiosk screen and she just says "I'm surprised this still works, it fell in the water at small world and I jumped in to get it!" and we look down to see that her legs/shoes are SOAKED....naturally we were shocked! I felt bad for our friends in fantasyland!

Oh my gosh!!!! Too much! I suppose she acted like there was nothing wrong with having jumped in the water....!!!

I thought so too. Considering that WDW is twice the size of Manhattan, that makes it a city in its own right. Would make sense to have their own force.
