What does "GTY" mean??

It means you are gaurenteed a room in at least the catagory that you have booked in but have no specific room number yet.

Why would that ever happen?? Is it something common?
Sorry to ask such silly questions, but I've seen the tem here used a few times, but had no idea what it meant.

As the ship gets fuller, the cruiseline wants some flexibility in assigning rooms. Someone might book a GTY cabin beacuse that's the only option left, or they're hoping that the cruisline might find it more convienent to upgrade them.
