They are not asking passengers to turn the airplane mode off,
they are asking passengers to turn the entire phone device off.
An iPod is a "digital device" as well.
They ask that those be turned off for take-off and landing, too.

I know an iPod is a digital device. I always follow the rules when I fly. I've just haven't been in a plane since I got my iphone. I guess I should've said I'm glad that I'll still have music if I'm not allowed to have my phone on at all during a flight
i never said I didn't turn it off during take off and landing. I was saying if I couldn't use it at all on a flight. (sorry I had to edit a few posts, maybe they'll clarify) I always turn my ipod and kobo on when told, and turn it off when landing. I was just asking why have an airplane mode if some airlines will allow you to use it while some will tell you to keep it off and its been answered
