Stupid Question, Flight Mode

The airline has the right to ask you to turn all electronic devices off. Even if it's only to make someone else feel better, and even if you don't believe in their reasons, it's still their plane and their call to make.

I've seen gas ignite spontaneously, or at least due to static electricity(??), usually when someone pumps into a gas can sitting in the bed of their truck instead of putting it on the ground. Not real sure modern cell phones generate a spark or produce any type of electrical flux capable of sparking gasoline, but I'm very sure that any avgas fumes floating around INSIDE the cabin of a plane will have little problem igniting whether my cell phone is trying to connect to a cell tower or not :)

Anyway, it is a good time to chat with the wife, read the skymall magazine, or calculate pi out as far as possible. Only becomes an issue with multiple connections, really, or when I'm at a really good part of a book :)

hey OP, not a stupid question at all.... I was wondering the same thing :goodvibes

I believe that to be true, as well, but the airlines (up to now, at least) have been reticent to allow cellular phones to be ON (capable of connecting to the cell network) during taxing and flying because of their RF interference potential.

This is correct just remember if ur not sure how to put ur phone in flight mode just put it in silent mode so nothing chimes like texts or other alerts...

First off I was joking, and didn't get back to answering.
2nd.. You have to be pretty lame and no life to worry about someone's grammar while using an iPhone ! Get a life!!

And here you go with more name calling..... only proving my point further. I love it when people make themselves out to be the bad guy.
Watch out Frollo, we have a real villain here. :rotfl2:

The last time I flew was on Jet Blue and during the announcements before take off, on both flights coming and going, they said something along the lines of "please power down your cell phone completely, and do not leave it in airplane/flight mode" - they actually specified this.

Then what's the point of airplane mode? I'd be ticked esp. Because my phone is my iPod and I need music to calm me down while flying. I do Not like the sound of the engines

This is not an airline rule it is an FAA rule. I was told by a rather high-up in the FAA that they cannot possible test every electronic device out there. I realize that 50% of passengers will not follow the rules but how hard is it? What did people do before cell phones? Nothing is so darn important! :confused3 Anyway, just turn it off for takeoff and landing and airplane mode during flight is fine. I've been flying for 20 years and I've had more than one pilot call me during flight to ask if someone had a cell phone on because his radio was picking up interference or one of the dials was acting hinky. Once we found the culprit and it was turned off the problem was solved. I love Mythbusters but they're not pilots with thousands of hours in an aircraft. ;)

Our last Jet Blue flight didn't really care for airplane mode...they wanted all devices completely shut off. So your question had me wondering as well. I found this on line:

"Although airplane mode technically makes a phone legal to use on an aircraft, some airlines request that passengers turn their cellphones off anyway, or a flight attendant who is not familiar with the technology may ask you to turn your phone off. Sometimes, explaining that you are using airplane mode is sufficient, and the flight attendant will allow you to leave your phone on, but in other cases, you may be asked to turn it off. Although this may seem unreasonable, it is better to comply; in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, airlines are entitled to remove passengers from flights if they fail to comply with requests the airline terms “reasonable.”"

I tend to agree with your thoughts, but I think the bigger question is, why the inconsistency from airline to airline?

We flew Air Tran this past March, and they made the announcement that all phones had to be off, that airplane mode was not acceptable.

FTR, the Mythbusters said that the phones they used in their test did not interfere with the instruments of the plane they used in their test. They also said that there are so many phones and planes out there that they couldn't possibly test all of the combinations and it was just a good idea to turn it off in case one of those combinations cause a problem.

Bottom line - it is unlikely to cause a problem but do you want to be the schmuck whose phone brings down a plane.

The only time I was told that airplane mode was insufficient was on a teeny in-between-island plane in Hawaii. This was a plane where you were seated for weight distribution.

There's also the question of, can the airline trust every single person to know how his or her phone works? And does the flight attendant have time to go around, check every single phone, and argue with every single dope who insist he does when he doesn't?

I used to work in a museum where flash photography wasn't allowed. Nine times out of ten, when a flash went off it was because the person didn't know how to turn the flash off on his own camera.

I guess I know why they say turn your phone and I will turn it off if told before the flight begins that airplane mode isn't allowed. I don't want to be that person :thumbsup2

Luckily I still have a backup ipod :D

Some devices are worse than others in generating RF interference.
