Since when is it OK to walk out of the grocery store pushing your cart, and stroll right out in front of cars without even looking or nodding a thank you?
I have noticed this a LOT lately. People walk out of the door and straight out into the road/drive way area between the store and the parking lot. OMG I feel tempted to actually hit one of them! They dont even look let alone thank you for stopping. If they do look they give you a "Yea, you better stop you jerk" kind of look. Morons. :snooty: Of course there are many who are very courteous and wave a thank you as they scoot across the street... but I'm just venting about those idiots who are either stupid or rude or both.

Thank you. Vent over.

They're probably talking on their cell-phones or listening to their IPod while they're on their way to oblivion.

agnes!

In New Jersey it's the law to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

I know what you mean, I actually had someone run out in front of my car without even looking! Some people aren't very bright.

I think you live in the same area I do. They do that all the time. Drives my husband and I crazy. Also the ones who walk behind your car as you are pulling out of a parking spot. What happened to common sense?

Well yes it's the law here too. But the law of nature tells most people with any brains that they COULD get SMASHED if they dont look.

And its not in a crosswalk. It's in a private parking lot.

I hear you. It drives me crazy that no one looks to make sure they don't get hit. I don't know about them, but I don't want to take my chance that the driver is paying attention or not.

We actually have the signs in our parking lots too. Grocery stores and other businesses. I agree with you because people do act as if they are the only ones that matter or they are oblivious to anything around them. It's a shame because as the driver, if you hit them (even if it wasn't technically your fault) you would be at fault.

I have the opposite problem at the grocery store I go to. Trying to cross from the parking lot to the store is like playing Frogger.

I think some people have adjustment issues while transitioining from indoors to outdoors. Or they just don't pay any attention, or even worse they think they are entitled to barge through the parking as a sign of thier supreme place in the world.:crazy2:

I rode through the University area the other morning, let's just say I don't know how some of the students have lived to be as old as they are. I did stop for all crosswalks, but students on bikes however did not and one girl crossing in the crosswalk was nearly wiped out by a guy on a bike, he never slowed or apologized, just kept on keeping on. I have vowed never to go that way again in the morning!

I agree that pedestrians need to be mindful, and not assume that cars will automatically stop for them.

Based on where I live though, many drivers also need to be mindful of the fact that they are on a parking lot, be on the lookout for pedestrians, and not drive with the same speed as if they were still on a road.

Around here there are signs in the grocery store parking lots that the pedestrians have the right of way.

And I completely agree with you that the one who don't look first are idiots. They're pretty stupid to just assume the person driving the big metal box is paying attention.

Having the right of way won't make it hurt any less if they get hit.

It's a parking lot! Pedestrians have the right of way. Cars should be going slow enough to safely navigate the parking lot. I get fed up with cars who race around and expect shoppers with unwieldly carts to be able to stop for the cars that zip out between the rows, or try to race along the aisle (path) in front of the store

It is the car's responsibility to yeild to the pedestrian in a parking lot.

Exactly. I don't expect speeding cars in front of the freakin grocery store!! If you are stupid enough to hit someone, your pocket is going to be hurting due to the lawsuit and the insurance premiums going through the roof!!!

IMO, there is no excuse to even NEARLY hit somone in a parking lot unless it is a child that darted out (god forbid).

I agree, you're in a parking lot with people who have hands or carts loaded, and possibly small children. It's your responsibility as a driver to slow down and pay attention to what's going on around you. Yes pedestrians should also be paying attention to their surroundings, but they do have the right of way.

It's the people who don't bother to even look before they cross that baffle me. We're taught when we're young to look both ways before crossing the street, right of way or not. When you learn to drive, the first thing you're told is to be aware of your surroundings.

Why on earth would anyone on foot not bother to look and put their personal safety in the hands of someone behind the wheel? That's just dumb. When it comes to vehicle vs pedestrian, no matter what the speed, the pedestrian is the one most likely to be injured. Why would anyone with any common sense not look before they cross?

I'm sorry, but your statement above really bothers and hurts me.

I did hit two pedestrians 7 years ago. They were crossing the street (where there was no crosswalk, so they were jaywalking) in front of my car. I had a green light and I had the right of way. I didn't even know they were there until it was too late. When everything was over, I was not found at fault and there were nearly cited for crossing at a non-pedestrian crosswalk. There was a lawsuit and they did get a lot of money (personally, they were at fault, not me and didn't deserve money).

Calling somebody stupid for hitting a pedestrian is a horrible and hurtful comment. I never asked for that to happen to me. I have suffered from PTSD since it - flashbacks to the accidents while driving and even just sitting at home watching TV, insomnia, anxiety attacks and the list goes on and on. My emotional wounds will never heal...they get better over time, but they will never go away.

I didn't wake up that morning thinking that I was going to go out and hit two people. I had never (and still haven't) had an accident or even gotten a ticket in my driving career. So no, not everybody who hits pedestrians are stupid. Most people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
