Stupid names for a child

Anytime you give your child a name they aren't going to use you are causing them big problems. If you name your son William and he goes by Bill he can run into big problems at security. If his ID says William and the plane ticket says Bill he could get denied passage by security.

I saw someone get held up at SeaTac last week. Name didn't match. TSA agent started questioning person. Manager then came over who was well versed in American customs and let the person through. You are basically gambling that the TSA people at your checkpoint know American customs. This isn't a guarantee anymore.

You have been lucky. Why not just officially change their name to the one they use?

I have a co worker named Terrance, he goes by Terry, our company booked his flight in the name Terry, he did not get Precheck because the name on the ticket did not match in the computer.
With how the computer now decides everything at the TSA TDC, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that some people had to go back to the ticket counter to get their ticket changed because TSA wouldn't let them through for a name mismatch.

So parents have a crystal ball when they name their child? All three of our kids, and I, "go by" shortened names of our given names. The only issue I had flying is when I first got TSA Pre-Check, I didn't put my middle name in my application. The day before my first flight, I found out I had my middle name in my Delta account. So that took about a 30 minutes phone call with Delta to get sorted. Kids have never had an issue.

On one soccer team my son was on, there were four kids named "Jonathan". One went by "Jonathan", one "JP", and two used "Jon". I guess three of them should get their legal name changed?

Airlines are quite clear that the ticket name must match your ID. I guess I don't understand why you would book a plane ticket that says anything other than your official first name that matches your ID. Variation in including the middle name/initial I can understand. But while I go by Becky, the plane ticket always says Rebecca. That's just common sense. I have no sympathy for blatant stupidity like booking under Bill for William.

My roommate has completely changed his name. Plane ticket goes under his given name that matches his license. Why ask for trouble?

Because I think a nickname as a legal name is tacky. Everyone knows to book travel in your legal name. My young adult kids are frequent travelers, have passports, all identification has their legal name, only an idiot wouldn’t use it when booking travel.

Agreed, and I think most people are aware of it. I recently got a Real ID drivers license for the first time, and it has my full name, including middle name, which was required on the form. Previously, it only had my middle initial (been driving for 40+ years), which is also what most of my credit cards, insurance cards etc. have. So now I will have to book airline tickets using the full name. I also have a nickname/shortened form of my first name, but never use it for anything official.

No one I know has ever made that mistake. My name doesn’t lead to a nickname, always hated that. One of my five kids goes by her legal name. About 1/4 of people use nicknames, and can still travel.

Only if they are dumb. Heck my mom was given an official name at birth (a saints name because she was catholic and that’s a requirement), was given an entirely different name to use, everyone called her the second name until she met my dad, he preferred her given name. My mom’s entire side of the family called her by her second name, my dad’s entire side of the family called her by her first name. Of course travel was booked with her first name, because that’s what you do.

I had to make sure my name in my various airline FF programs has my middle name also after the real ID thing. They need it to put the precheck on the boarding pass.

Was chatting with a CS rep at the bank today, she was from Ethiopia and her first name is Roman. She said she has come across a lot of confused Americans, but that it is a common name for girls in Ethiopia. I could sympathize a bit as my Irish name is often misspelled and mispronounced. We do need to recognize cultural differences when considering names.

I go by a nickname of my middle name. I've never had any trouble with remembering to use my full name on things. Anyone who knows me more than very casually knows what my legal name is. My workplaces have always known my legal name. Why would anyone book an airline ticket in something other than their legal name? My husband always goes by his full legal first name, but I still always double check his passport before booking to double check if he needs his middle initial, his "JR," etc. because it pops up as a reminder. They're very clear that the name on the ticket has to match the ID.

While tickets are not an issue, I was very careful to name my kids names where the nicknames would be easily recognizable, etc. to avoid some of the irritating confusion that is bound to happen. One of my sons briefly wanted to go by a nickname of his middle name. Go figure. (I was glad when it didn't stick!)

As someone who grew up with a "mis-spelled" first and middle name, a hard-to-spell last name, and initials that spell out an unpleasant word, this topic is a special pet peeve of mine. People think they are being cute, edgy, trendy, ethnic, whatever, when they give their kids offbeat names. What they are doing is causing life-long problems for another human being. You have nine months to come up with a sensible name that your offspring will have to live with their entire life, please resist the urge to gratify whatever itch you have to indulge your own vanity by being "different".
