How do you get the books? I understand you download them but how do you pay for them? MIL bought dh a kindle for christmas and I would like to pre-pay for some books or get a giftcard but not sure how that all works!

Thanks!

Register the kindle to your amazon account when it arrives. Then whenever you buy a book online it will be sent to your kindle. You can also shop the kindle store at amazon using your kindle. The books will be charged to the credit card on file (or the gift card balance).

Target also has Amazon Kindle gift cards hanging in the electronic section (although I'm sure they can be used on regular Amazon purchases also).

DO NOT REGISTER the Kindle until he receives it.

My husband did this, and it caused me trouble. He thought he'd be nice: He registered it, using his email address ('cause he didn't want me to start getting emails saying "Welcome to Kindle", which was sensible). He bought me two books so I'd have something to look at right away.

But I wanted the Kindle registered to MY email. When I buy a book, I want to get the email at MY own address. So I called and tried to change it to my name / my email. What a hassle. I was on the phone with a man with a strong Indian accent for quite some time.

Get him an Amazon gift card. Let him register it himself on Christmas Day (it's quick and easy), and then he can make his first purchases himself.

I am assuming the download is automatic (not one of those register today, get a code tomorrow kind of things)? I plan to buy one for DH and I would like for him to be able to use it right away.

Registration is immediate. :)

Yes it's immediate - it takes less time to download a book than a song from iTunes. I have an "older" version of the kindle where I can turn off the wireless to save battery power - when I turn the wireless on the book's I have bought download automatically.

The new Kindle has this feature, too. You can select from the menu and turn the wireless on or off as you need to.

I heard about the kindle a few years ago when my son had to research the product for his english class. I think they are really cool.

My question is, do they have downloads that you can borrow for a time like a library or do you have to purchase all the books? I use the library a lot because they are free and have a lot of the new books.

Kindle doesnt use the same ebook format that most lending libraries use. You can convert books to kindle format using a free program called called calibre if the book is not drm protected. However libraries typically use drm to prevent the pirating of books. Non drm'd books are usually part of the public domain already and are available from amazon for free and already in kindle format. Rumor has it that amazon will be rolling out a software update that will allow kindle owners to lend out there books to other kindle owners. But at some poiint someone had to purchase that book.

Some other eBook readers - B&N's nook & Sony eReaders that I know of - are compatible with most libraries' eBook formats. This is the main reason I've decided to go with a nook for my partner for Christmas; she uses the library a lot & I know will not want to purchase a lot of books for her eReader.
