Stuffing vs. Dressing --- What Do You Say?

I thought she was making salad dressing until they said somthing about stuffing i have never heard it called stuffing before.

It seems most people call it stuffing, at least from the posts so far. Stuffing here too in California.

If it's in a bird it's Stuffing,...if it's in a pan it's Dressing, I don't care what Stove top calls it...In the South it's DRESSING :rotfl2:

I had never heard of dressing (except as George points out, on salad), until my in-laws.

I still pretty much say stuffing, but if it isn't really stuffed in a bird, I can accept that it can't really be called stuffing then... :)

My mom used to make this awesome hamburger-based stuffing (and it WAS stuffing), but I regret not having gotten the recipe...

It's totally a North/South thing. I was born in the Midwest, moved to the South when I was 9. We have always called it stuffing, but everyone we know that was born and raised in the South calls it dressing.

Stuffing for us too, regardless of where it was cooked. Had never even heard of it being called dressing until this year, on the boards!!

also, for anyone who thinks Kevin is a food snob, just listen to him defending Stove Top to Julie...:lmao:

It's stuffing here, and we never cook it inside the turkey. Mainly because to be sure you're cooking it to get to the "safe" temperature, you're gonna dry out the bird.

I love the carb loading that goes on at Thanksgiving. Had to say it. ;)

I've always called it Stuffing, but I have heard it called Dressing too. But I live on the border between the North and South.

I'm in central Jersey and have only ever heard it called stuffing. Kind of like the gravy vs. sauce debate, lol. (to me gravy is brown, sauce is red, lol) But I have to say that when I heard Julie talking about "cornbread dressing", I thought it was some kind of dipping sauce to use with cornbread. I was actually going to google it bc it sounded so good, lol! Can't wait for mom's stuffing tomorrow - and I only eat it out of the baking dish - not the bird! Have a great holiday everyone!!

I'm from Alabama, and I grew up calling it dressing. In our family, dressing is made with cornbread and cooked in a casserole dish.

My DH is from Connecticut, and he calls it stuffing. His mom always made it with stale bread and cooked it in the bird.

I have to admit, I like the taste of stuffing a little bit better. Although, we never, ever cook it in the bird. Blech!

oh yeah, we use white bread too. But it has to be Wonder Classic White. Can't be the no-brand breads or the bags of already ripped up bread. LOL I guess we all have our ways of liking things! I saw stuffing made with cornbread once on a cooking show and it looked really good! And has anyone tried the stuffing muffins? Where you scoop the stuffing into muffin pans so everyone gets their own individual muffin of stuffing and everyone gets the crunchy top? Mmm, they are very good!! :thumbsup2

It's stuffing.

The Victorians were idiots. They covered the legs of their tables, because they thought it "indecent" to show legs.

This sounds great and they will cook faster. Thanks forthe idea.

Now that I think of it, isn't dressing a turkey the removal of all the feathers, innards, etc?? So, if you're putting stuff back in, wouldn't it be called "re-dressing"?!? :)

In Iowa we say stuffing - and I am with Kevin, there is nothin' wrong with Stove Top!!

Dressing to us is only referred to when talking about salad dressing.

We also say "pop" instead of "soda"! :thumbsup2

This was discussed on the Today show, stuffing is as it says, stuffed instead the turkey, chicken, duck, etc.

Dressings and it has an s on it, is a dish served as a side to the meat.
