I am researching all the DVC resorts so that I can determine which resort would be best for us to call "home."

I noticed that most of the studios have a Queen bed and a Double sleeper sofa. The exceptions are VGF (Queen bed, Queen sleeper & murphy bed) and VWL (Queen bed, Double sleeper & murphy bed).

My question is for those who have teenagers. Do your kids share a double size sleeper sofa?

My kids are not teens yet but they are of the opposite sex. Since they insist on growing up, I have to take into account our future needs, not just what has worked until now.

I appreciate any insight that anyone may have to offer!

We STILL occasionally share a studio with my 2 boys (21 yr old /5 "9" &
17 yr old/ 6 ft) AND without the murphy bed. :rolleyes2
We have a queen size air mattress that 1 kid sleeps on while the other gets the couch as is (does not open sofa bed). ::yes::
:thumbsup2 This works out fine for us for at least a few days to 1 week then we'll just get on each others nerves if longer!! :rotfl:

The murphy bed is a great addition to the studio!!!! I wish more DVC villas were like that!! :scratchin

Enjoy!! :flower3:

We purchased DVC so we could stay in the larger villas with our teen boys. Studios and regular Disney hotel rooms were too small for our family of 4 when they hit the preteen and teenage years.

If I HAD to pick a studio for our family, it would be one with the extra murphy bed. Keep in mind that the murphy beds are on the small size, so if you end up with a 6 foot teen, they would most likely not be comfortable on that bed.

We have teen boys, and they also got where they did not like to share the same pullout at around age 10 or so. We have been in larger villas since then. Just makes for a better vacation when the kids have "their" space and the parents have "our" space.

Our kids are opposite sex too and needed separate beds. After a week at the Poly with DH and I in one Queen bed, DS in the other and DD barely fitting in the so-called (tiny) "day bed" (I'm not sure they even have those anymore!), we bought enough BWV points for a 2-BR. Bringing an air mattress on the plane so one could have the foldout couch in a 1-BR was not something we wanted to do.

I have 3 teens...twin DDs almost 16 and DS almost 18. We bought DVC in 2006 and got 1BR villas until 2011. We'd put our DDs on the sleeper sofa and DS would get the aerobed that we'd bring from home (sleeper chairs were not a thing back then). Xmas 2011, when they were almost 13, 13 and 15...we began getting 2BR villas. I have always suggested DDs sleep together in 2nd bedroom in the regular bed and DS sleep in the sleeper sofa there (or 2nd bed depending on which resort...BCV 2Q 2BR, HHI, OKW...have 2 regular beds). But DS likes to not be in the same room with DDs so DDs get the entire 2nd bedroom and DS sleeps on sleeper in living room. DDs like their own beds too and they take over the 2nd bathroom (AKV-Kidani is nice as it has 3 full bathrooms so DS gets his own as well). So, I'd say you don't have very long until you'll need 3 beds/sleepers...one for mom and dad, one for DS and one for DD. I wouldn't consider the flip down murphey or any trundle type thing for a teen or adult (my teens are all 5'9" and taller).

Some 1BR villas have sleeper sofa AND sleeper chair...I'd say that is your best bet. AKV, HHI, VWL, OKW come to mind (not sure if any others). Maybe look at enough points at AKV where you can get a 1BR standard view...the 1BR value does not have the extra bathroom so you'd ALL be sharing the master bathroom...but the 1BR values at AKV are the best deal going.

We have 3 kids so 1 Bdrm is as small as we go. Then DH and I sleep in bedroom, DDs sleep on pullout. 10 & 13 next trip and DD 13 hates sharing. Ds will sleep in pullout chair or air bed. If you go the air bed route you can always buy an owners locker and put it in that.

When we stay in hotel rooms that sleep 5, we sleep DH + DS, me + DD and then 1 DD on the couch in room. Our opposite sex kids hate sleeping in same bed and I have a ton of kickers.

We always packed an aero bed as no one wanted to sleep together. Most stays were at BWV or Beach Club in the early days, before sleep chairs and murphy beds. The kids wouldn't share the sofa, but a married couple once did in a one bedroom. No complaints were made to me.

We had a twin aero and a double aero. (Not both at the same time) Never had a problem laying it out in any room somewhere. It travelled with us for studios, one bedrooms and 2 bedrooms.

My two boys won't share a bed at 15 and 10 and to be honest I don't blame them. Once our kids got close to being teenagers we upgraded to a 2 bedroom for our family as space is so much more important then. I'm of the opinion studios only work when they are very little then space is more important.

Do our kids sleep together? Hell no. 2 boys. Air mattress or (if we don't have enough points for a 2BR) a 1 BR at BLT or OKW due to sleeper chair (AKL not to our liking).

One of the biggest reasons that I'm buying into DVC is that I foresee in the very near future having to buy suites or two rooms as my opposite sex children get older. Sharing anything is getting very difficult. A Hotel room is very close quarters.

We spent many years carrying a twin air mattress (and sheets) because we travelled as me, dh, bil, and dd Brother in law got the sofa sleeper, DD the air mattress. We were always able to squeeze in the air mattress (sometimes moving the table to a different location. We ALWAYS stayed in a studio. The sofa always got folded up during the day, and frequently we could prop the mattress up against a wall. Of course, we spent very little time in the room.
And the small rooms at AK would not have fit the airmattress, but BWV, OKA, and SSR we had no problem.

DM, DS 11, DD 10, and I stayed in a value studio at AKV in January. DD took the couch, DS had the twin Aerobed in front of the couch, DM and I shared the bed. We were squeezing an extra trip out of our AP. It was doable, but definitely not something I would do frequently. It requires intense organization!!

As a family we vote and my kids both will take one less day in order to have the 2 bedroom. My husband is able to wake up early and enjoy his coffee while watching the news. The kids and I sleep the morning away, without him bugging us, lol! Everyone seems to be in a better mood the whole vacation, while we are in a 2 bedroom :goodvibes

We've found that the 1bd at OKW and AKV work great for us. That way DH and I get a separate bedroom and DS13 and DD10 have the sleeper sofa and sleeper chair. It has never worked well for us to share beds because DD is a horrible kicker and whoever shares her bed gets no sleep. We've done air mattresses at non-Disney hotels, but we usually fly to WDW and don't want to lug one along. I agree with the others who said that the more trips you take, the more you value the space. Now that we don't do the parks all day every day, it's nice to have space to spread out and relax and get a decent night's sleep. We'd make do in a studio with a murphy bed for a short trip, but for longer than a few nights, a one or two bedroom is much more pleasant.

When my kids (boy/girl) were pre-teens prior to owning DVC we would just have a regular hotel room, but they refused to sleep together because my DS kicked out a lot while sleeping so DH (who sleeps like a log anyway) would sleep with DS and I would sleep with DD.

Once we bought DVC and they became teenagers we always got a 1 BR and either had one in the sleeper chair/murphy bed or sometimes we brought an air mattress depending on where we stayed.

Now they are pretty much young adults (how did that happen?) and they insist on bringing their "friends" so lately it's been at least 2 BRs. I'm starting to think we need more points! ;)

Thanks so much everyone! You are confirming exactly what I suspected, that a Studio with bed sharing will not work for our family in the long run. And I suspect that a Studio with the murphy bed will not work for very long either.

Now the challenge is to convince my husband to spend the $ to get enough points for at least a 1 bedroom DVC!

You can start out with small number of points and add on later. Also, another trick I use is to leave off a Fri or Sat night as they take a few more points than Sun-Thur nights...and figure on a 6 night stay. For HHI we do 5 night stays and leave off both Fri and Sat nights as the points difference at HHI is huge.

That's a good idea! I had not thought of staying only during the low points nights.
