Studio Question

I am staying in a studio for the first time. I know I'll miss the room the 1 bedroom affords, and the jacuzzi tub and the washer dryer - but will I also be missing dishes and silverware? It seems that I read that just paper plates and plastic flatware were included. Is this true? I can't remember where I saw that so it might be a rumor. Can someone who has stayed in a studio tell me what is in the kitchenette?

Paper plates and bowls, plastic ware instead of silver ware. But you will get at least two ceramic mugs and possibly four glass glasses. There isn't a dishwasher in the studio, so the housekeepers have to wash the dishes by hand or bring them back to the main housekeeping area. I would imagine it would be difficult to carry a full setting of china around for each studio.

If I pre-order ice cream (which should not be eaten from a paper bowl, imho) is there a freezer section in the fridge that will hold it?

Are the glasses a suitable size to make an ice cream float?

You might have to request these and they may or may not have them for the studio.

Not really. It's small and doesn't freeze that well. You'd have soft ice cream.

Nope, they are small water glasses.

Hello; Here is a suggestion if you want china dishes and silverware. Order breakfast or diner through room service and keep the utensiles for your entire stay. Just wash them up and keep using them. As for ice cream, I'm a Bryers ice cream fan and have bought it at the store. It will stay pretty hard if you turn down the temperature, but be careful, there is a fine line between hard ice cream and frozen sodas.

I also request a full sized coffee pot when I check in, and have never had a problem getting one. Gotta have my morning coffee and my evening wine, or I am not on vacation!

I need my morning coffee and evening wine as well! So is the coffee pot a little 4 cup thing? Drat, does that mean my regular size coffee filters won't fit?

Hello: The coffee pot is 10 cup and I'm pretty sure there is a cork screw with the utensiles. Anything else?

The freezer sec. of mini fridge is barely large enough to slide a few bottled waters sideways into it...doesn't tend to freeze evenly either as there's always a bottle or two that doesn't get solid overnight.

Coffee pots & the mugs provided are small. Still, nice to have...now if they'd only get a washer & dryer

Yes, there's usually a wine bottle opener and a large coffee pot. We always bring the flat-bottom filters (can't stand the coffee that's provided ), large "travel mugs" for our morning coffees (need a lot of caffein in the am), and some plastic wine "glasses" (need a lot of wine in the pm ). We also make sure we pack a camping knife in case we purchase anything that needs cutting................those plastic knoves just don't "cut it" !
Since we don't like to cook on vacations, the studios work very well for us........cereals or muffins in the am, leftovers from TS the night before, or wine and cheeses. Honestly, it's not as if you'll be roughing it .

We just got back from a SSR studio a few weeks ago.

There was a full size coffee maker (10 or 12 cups, can't remember which). They only left two coffee set-ups, so we were glad we'd packed coffee.

There were 4 paper dinner plates, 4 paper bowls, and four plasticware packets (fork, knife, spoon, and napkin wrapped in plastic). There were also four glasses (about 12 oz., so no, not big enough for a rootbeer float -- are you going to be buying a refillable mug, though?), and four small coffee mugs.

I think there was a small manual can opener, but I don't remember seeing a corkscrew. There definitely were not wine glasses.

There was a toaster and a microwave. The refrigerator was a small "dorm" fridge like you find in the deluxe resorts. There would not be room for a quart of ice cream in the freezer. We could fit a few bottles of water to freeze every night.

The only other things in the kitchenette were a dish rag and a small bottle of dishwashing liquid.

Thanks all, I guess I'll go shopping at the dollar store and pick up some plastic bowls and glasses. Doesn't seem like 4 paper plates and 4 paper bowls would get more than one person through the three days before trash and tidy. Besides, eating out of paper bowls is just "eww".

I'll admit to not knowing much about the refillable mugs - except that they are a hot debate topic for some reason, and I haven't read those threads. Can someone clue me in?

Thanks for all the first hand info. I'm really looking forward to my stay, and it's nice to be able to come prepared with some "comforts" like bowls and glasses (and a wine bottle opener! )

Our last studio stay was at BCV -- while the studio did have a corkskrew, we found that the wine we picked up from the store there was a twist top, lol!
(It wasn't actually as bad as I assumed it would be -- but it was a funny process to watch while we were trying to figure out why the corkskrew wasn't working very well. . . I'll let you fill in that picture yourselves!)
I have had wine glasses in some studios -- perhaps left behind from a previous wine maven -- who knows? You may just luck out and have some in your room.
The freezer is pretty small -- you may want to look at it before you pick out your ice cream container. Or, better yet, get some fresh ice cream from B&C or the counter service at your resort -- I don't know which one you'll be staying at. Your ice cream float will taste even better!
I would recommend getting the refillable mug -- we've used ours for all types of things (instant soup, oatmeal, etc) when staying in a studio. I usually try to bring along some gladware -- that way, at the end of the stay I just throw it away instead of packing it to come home and I don't feel like it is such a loss.

We usually stay in studios and we don't care for the paper & plastic either. Like you, we go to the Dollar store and buy "gladware" type bowls. That way we can use them to eat out of or store breakables when we come home. And at $1 for 3, I don't feel bad about throwing them away before we come home.

In the studio I stayed in at SSR, there was a corkscrew but no wineglasses. I drank the overpriced little bottle of wine I got from the gift shop out of the water tumblers. I ate my bagel out of a paper bowl for the last four days of my trip because I didn't get a refill pack of plates.

In another thread, posters suggested asking housekeeping for a wineglass or more plates (or even china plates). There is a small "trial size" bottle of Palmolive, a small sponge, and two dishtowels, so you should be able to do your washing.

the water glasses are pretty big - you could definitely make a milk shake.

you can only get a pint of ice cream in the freezer. If good and frozen when it goes it - it will stay that way. If half frozen - then it will stay half frozen - okay might get a little harder but not a whole lot.

I like to bring my own disposable plates (never seems to be enough). I also buy a box of cutlery, too. I do not want to wash dishes or cutlery while I'm on vacation, so it makes great sense to me. I bring bowls (for cereal and salads) and medium size plates for bagels and toast.

I also like to bring a small pkg. of teabags, splenda and jam! Love the Harry and David jams......

When we were at OKW last in a studio, there was only one paper plate and bowl in the cabinet, so I called Mousekeeping and asked for some - they sent over a set of 12 bowls and 12 plates and 12 packs of plastic utensils.

I, too, will be staying in a studio (VWL) for the first time next week. We normally have a 1-bedroom, but this is a solo trip. I knew about the paper plates and plastic silverware, but am I understanding correctly that there are no sharp kitchen knives or other utensils? Do they not provide enough paper/plastic products for 4 days? Sounds like I should bring a corkscrew and a wine glass as well.
