This is the 4th day of student protests regarding the illegal immigration bill that is pending. Local High Schools have had lock downs, and one district cancelled school for all HS and Middle Schools students this week.

Are students walking out of your schools?

They are. I honestly think that it isn't about their "cause" - I think it's mostly kids who just want to get out of school for the day.

I got a letter from the county schools last night addressing this, so I guess it is happening, I'm just not aware of it.

No, and we're in an area where the number of people from Mexico is exploding. The census says our county is 5% Hispanic, but one of the school systems is 10% and the other is almost 17%. That says to me that there are a few folks here unofficially.

Our "official" number is 16%--not sure what the school percentage is.

Hi Lesley!!

I think high schools, as Steph said, will protest most anything, certainly if it will get them outdoors on a nice day, rather than at their desks studying algebra or whatever, LOL.

A bit OT, but not really, I recall you and MJ warning me about the illegals' checkpoint somewhat near San Diego, when I was driving from there to DL to meet you guys. I was lucky, they just waved me on though, guess I did not look like a typical illegal importer, LOL.

Yeah, it's happening here in Dallas. A bunch of them marched to Dallas City Hall, some of them got in and made it up to the 5th floor before they kicked them out. Then there were some who went swimming in the relecting pool in the front. I know that's how I get my point across, I jump into the nearest fountain.

Most of them interviewed by local news had no clue why they were marching, they did it to just get out of school.

I'm actually surprised we haven't. Our school district is 38% hispanic but all has been quiet, at least nothing that's made the papers. We've had protests ouside of Minute Man Project meetings though.

My niece told me about 80% of her school walked out earlier in the week. I asked her if she was one of them, and she said no. Her mom came here legally from El Salvador. She did say one of her friends was organizing the walk out and was pressuring her to go, but she just told him she had her own opinions. That's my baby :teeth:

I work across the street from the Houston City Hall and Tuesday about 1,000 local high school students were protesting. The Mayor actually met with them and explained the city government does not have any control over the federal issues. Local news called it a civic lesson. Yesterday my daughters school had a lockdown because a town south of us (Alvin) had students leave school and march towards Houston, thirty miles away. It started raining as they were passing my daughters school and they all tried to get out of the rain at her school. As my daughter pointed out last night most of the "protestors" were just looking for an excuse to get out of class.

My niece said the same thing, she thought only a few actually knew what the protest was for. Mostly they thought it was fun to be rebellious.

Yes.
10-ish weeks left in Phoenix! :cool1:

It's happening in Las Vegas too. I just finished watching a news story about it. Today is the third day of walkouts.

Nothing that I'm aware of out here. Sounds to me like it's been mainly focused in the west/southwest, not that it's any better. I also suspect that most of the students are only using it as an excuse to get out of class instead of learning why they're doing what they're doing.

There have been a lot of protesting around my area. Not so much today or yesterday, but earlier in the week. Monday was pretty scary on the drive home. I was coming down a street I generally drive down (Ball rd next to DL) and we all had to pull over to the side while SWAT trucks, humvees, police wagons, trucks, and cars came flying down the street. It took a few minutes for all of the caravan to pass. Lights and sirens going. They were going to control an area where there was protesting. Then on Tuesday I came home down Katella and one of the the lanes for a block were closed off by kids hanging around waving the Mexican flag. Basically, the protesters made me get home late both days. UGH!!!
