Stuck on the first step of the Space Quest!

I am such a dope! It says something about going for a drive in space. I've driven on both the quest track, and the off road room...picking up gas cans in both places, but eventually I still fail this first step. What the heck am I doing wrong?

You need to go to the Autopia Race track the one where the road is black.
