Stuck at WDW during tornado....?

If you had to be at WDW during a tornado, where would you prefer to be?

  • La Cava in Mexico. It is a cave, after all.... with tequila.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean, after the drop. It's underground, right? ;-)

  • Tower of Terror: A truly terrifying experience, with a view.

  • On Soarin' - Make it a really authentic experience.

  • Inside the Contemporary. Nothing's moving that building!

  • Since there aren't any basements, inside the Utilidors.

Utilidors - not because they're safer, but because I'd love to see them!

Are guests allowed in the utilidors in the event of an emergency? If so, that's definitely where I'm heading.

The summer before last there was a tornado they were tracking on RADAR headed directly towards Disney. We were in our room at the time, so I made everyone stay there figuring we could hunker down in the back of the room away from the windows, in the bathroom if it hit the area.

We waited in the room until the weather men on tv said the storm had dissipated.

Given my choice though, I would say the Utilidors would be the safest option.

In a tornado, a huge danger is flying debris.

So, I'm heading for someplace deserted......like Capt EO or Country Bear Jamboree.

Not exactly a tornado, but once we were at Fantasmic when there was a very strong storm. For some reason, they did not cancel. I think just during the show there was no lightneing, but the wind picked up. Later, we heard reports of downspouts over the water that night. The palm trees were doubled over. We were soaking wet and COLD.

It was SO windy the water from the show was blowing all over us! We saw a bay carrier get blown off the bleacher seat. Luckily the baby was strapped inside, so they were not injured. Just a quick wake up!

Maybe that's why I still don't love Fantasmic. I always think of that night.

Seriously, no votes for Soarin'?! I mean, you're supposed to feel like you're flying anyway, right??

the utilidors are basements.

That's where I'm heading.

No they aren't, they are actually ground level. Them being "basements" is a common misconception. You can't build down in Florida without hitting water 10 feet below.

I wonder if they keep the alcohol from BOG somewhere down there... Then I'd be a happy storm survivor.

I would think the utilidors would be the safest place, but not sure how safe.

Honestly, that would be the only time that I wouldn't want to be at WDW.

At least at home we have a basement ;)

Last year during spring break my husbands emergency warning went on the cell phone while we were in Adventure Land. We asked and were directed to the stores on Main Street. We hunkered down in the back of one of the stores, and I think we figured out where the utilidors entrance was by watching for the 45+ minutes we waited back there. Donna

I posted this in another thread.

At Magic Kingdom, during inclement weather, some attractions may operate as a rain shelter. This includes theaters, omnimovers operating at slow speed boarding every other car, and others. In the event of a reported tornado in the area, leaders will execute a Plan C evacuation and take everyone downstairs. If a warning is in the area, anything that may violate character integrity or ruin the show/magic will be hidden to the best of their ability in the case of a Plan C evacuation. During September 11, Magic Kingdom only had a Plan A evacuation and we have not, to this day, had a live Plan B evacuation.

Hope this helps!

Inside the Tree of Life (It's Tough to Be a Bug theatre). It's a safe haven in case of tornado. I'm from Iowa, so as soon as we're in a tornado warning, my first instinct is to get under the ground, and Tree of Life is really the only option at AK.

At MK, Utilidors might be a good option (not opened to guests except in a Plan C evac, which we've never had before, as Hub mentioned). I'd also take the PhilharMagic theatre, anywhere within Pirates after the drop, and Ariel.

At Epcot, I'd stay far away from La Cava--all that glass everywhere would make me a little nervous, especially since La Cava isn't underground, it's in the pyramid above ground. I would probably seek shelter in one of the theatres, really any would do, including Soarin' assuming that the gliders are not running.

At Studios I would want to be in One Man's Dream or Magic of Animation.
