Strollers for Older children?

Hey all!

We have a beautiful 5 year old who will be 6 when we go.

My wife and I are having a discussion about what to do about a stroller... We don't know if she will need it in the Magic Kingdom or MGM, but definitely in Epcot and in Animal Kingdom.

Not to mention, she can rest in the stroller in the afternoon (with a towel over the stroller to keep the sun off), and at the end ofthe day we will hear less whining.

So we are trying to decide... should we wait until we get there and rent one, or buy a stroller and take it with us?

We would like to get one down tehre, but we are worried about her not fitting. Anyone know where we can find the dimensions and stats of the Disney strollers? Or of a good one for older kids that folds up decents?

Our experience with a Disney rental stroller in January 2005 was that the things are huge. DD was 5 years old then but she is tall for her age. She had no problem at all fitting into any of the single strollers throughout the WDW parks and was quite comfortable. We will be renting a stroller for DD this March. She will be 6 years old and is completelly capable of walking. She has walked for miles through the streets of London and Paris -- but she does slow down as the distance increases. The stroller makes so much sense in so many ways. Our pace will not be affected if her feet hurt; she has a place to sit at all times; and we are able to make good time from one attraction to another.
The rental cost is minimal and worth the peace of mind.

Rent one. Trying to get your's on/off the Disney bus (if your going to use it) is very hard, especially when the bus is full.

My DD just turned 7 when we went (very small for you age) and a DS 5. We didn't have one on the 1st day at Magic Kingdom and we wished to did. We did it for the rest of the trip.

The benefits are:
- no need to hold their hands, we know where they were
- they could have a snack/drink as we pushed them to the next thing
- places to put your coat, snacks and drinks

Yeah, we got one for her last year, and I just couldn't remember how well she fit into it (and considering she has grown quite a bit taller already, and still 7 months to go...)

If you do rent one at Disney! We put something "red" on the handle so we could find it faster when we come out of rides/shows. There is usually a space to put strollers when you enter a ride/show, but sometimes there's A LOT OF STROLLERS!!!

we just got home from DIsney in Sept 2005 my son was 4 1/2 we brought his stroller with us. He used it everyday. I liked the idea of him being able to jump in or out anytime he got tired. I also liked the idea to watch the parades he didn't have to sit on the hot ground.
we are going in Dec 2006 (he will be 5 1/2) we will bringing the same stroller with us. He doesn't use it home but I believe at Disney he needs it to take breaks from walking. I know as a ::cough::: year old I wish I had one all day long lol my legs get tired I am sure he will be hurting at the end of a day.

If you decide to rent one
tie something to the handle so you can easily find it
bring a towel or something (from the hotel is fine) to lay on the seat since it is heavy plastic it gets very hot.
I have never rented one since I like to walk Downtown Disney at night and we like to have a stroller for that. I also like the idea of having my OWN things with me so my son is always comfortable.

Oh also those strollers are HUGE your child will fit nicely into it

my daughter was 6 and my son was 4 when we went in December and we rented a double stroller. They both fit in it perfectly and we were glad we had it in AK and the Mk. We did not use one in MGM. I think you would be better off renting one, i don't think you would be able to find one big enough prior to your trip.

We're going to WDW in August and I was concerned about renting a stroller for my 4 (he'll be 4 1/2) year old son. Someone had mentioned a website (A Baby's Best Friend...www.bbf.com) and you can rent strollers from them. I checked out the site and I may consider renting from them. However, I may just wind up renting while at the parks. Does anyone know if the park rental strollers recline (for sleepy little ones?).

Our DD was just a few weeks shy of her 6th birthday when we went last September. She was fine walking most of the day but by later on in the evening got tired. By the time we were leaving the parks or once we got on the busses, she would pass right out. LOL She is a tall girl for her age and definitely not light at all. Even DH gets tired if carrying her. So a stroller is still very handy for us. We bring our own. It is just a Kolcraft Umbrella stroller that we bought 2 years ago when Toys R Us was having a green tag sale. We got it for $4.95! We have only used it 2x for WDW trips so it was certainly worth the $$. Plus, it;s great to carry the backpack or souvies in during the day. Rebecca

I have a 4 and 7 year old girls. They are not big, but tall and I think that they will do fine in the stroller should they get tired. I was up in the air until I saw the pics! Thanks again!

Last time we went we had a 2 year old and 5 year old. They both fit fine in a double. We only had one day at MK and one day at sea world so we needed to 'make time' and the stroller was very nice when having to head across the park for some reason. I think the rental ones are great for the older kids as it is more like a 'cart' than a stroller. They would just hop in and we would go instead of having to lift them up into a stroller. We're going in 2007 and they will now be 6 and 9. Thinking of renting a single some of the days (going a week this time) for the younger one. Figured the older one could cram herself into it every now and then for a rest if needed. Only plan to do it on the couple of days that we plan to spend ALL day at the park instead of taking a mid day break.

I took the tray off so much room for my son. The basket below is HUGE so it's great to hold all my things that I shop for all day long. It lays down flat to so my son is nice and comfy. oh it folds so flat too and 1 handed

Not sure if you're aware of this, but you can buy a really nice reclining umbrella-folding stroller at WDW. Right at the place you rent them from. They're red and black - Kolcraft. Storage basket, cup holder, easy to fold and get on the bus. They cost $40, but seeing as how to rent a single it's $10/day it was much better for us to buy one.
