If you have to remove the wheels to fold it properly, then be prepared with a tote bag big enough to hold the wheels; you will have to take them as one of your carryons and put them in the overhead bin. The rest of the stroller can be gate-checked with no problem.
You COULD gate-check the wheels, too, if you put them in a sturdy duffel, but the odds of getting both pieces back at the same time are not really good; anything that looks like luggage usually ends up on the baggage wagon for the carousels, even if it has a gate tag.
