I bought a light weight stoller for my 6 yr old. She is 44 lbs and 44 inches tall. I thought if she had the stoller, we would avoid more meltdowns and probably be able to see more of the parks.

Am I going to be looked at funny because I have such a big kid in a stoller?

I don't think so...there are a lot of kids in strollers at Disney. We will have a (almost) 6 year old in a stroller when we go there in November. Who cares anyway...if it saves any of our sanity, it's well worth the looks we may get (and I don't think there will be any!):D No ones happy if mom's not happy...right!;)

I rented a double stroller last year for my 6 and 7 year olds in Epcot. We didn't get any weird looks except for my DH looking at me trying to push this up and over the bridges...my kids are much more than 44 lbs a piece....(Huff...Puff!) He had to lend his muscle!

Anyway, don't worry want others will think. This is your vacation and it will help you keep track of her too. That was my favorite part of the stroller. Nice to give them a break in the shade, also nice to have a spot to put all your stuff.

Have a great trip!

Pam

Use your stroller!

We took a trip last year with extended family. I had a lightweight double stroller for my two little ones (1 & 3 at the time). The first day, my two neices (both 8!) took turns riding in it when the 3 year old wanted to walk. When they couldn't get in the stroller, they conned their dads into shoulder rides. One day of that was enough. The rest of the trip, my brothers rented a double stroller for the 8 year olds. My DW actually took a break in it waiting in line for Kali (and I have the picture to prove it).

So no, I don't think you should worry about using a stroller for your 6 year old. Besides, it's a long walk out at the end of the day when kids are tired....

Have fun.

Where did you find a lightweight stoller to hold a 44 lb child? I've looked and haven't been able to find any! I was figuring on just renting one.

Check Walmart.com and search for "Cosco"- they have a Cosco deluxe comfort ride for around $20, it reclines and can hold a child up to 40 lbs. My sister bought one for my 5 1/2 yr old nephew the last time we went "just in case" and it ended up being a must have item, esp. at night. It was a decent stroller for the price. My nephew weighed more than 40 lbs but the stroller held up pretty well. By the end of the week, it was in kind of rough shape so she didn't even bother bringing it back. It ended up being a lot cheaper than renting one plus we used it to go to DTD for the day & shop. I wouldn't say its the best quality stroller, but for $20 you'be probably get your money's worth.

Nope you won't be looked at funny.....I have seen more adults and teens sitting in these while waiting or resting! I have a DD-6 who is as tall as my DS-8 and I will be bringing my double stroller. We rented one one year and it cost us more than the stroller at home cost. We always bring our own now, saves on meltdowns and a great place to carry all the "stuff" we need for the 5 DCherubs! Pixie dust to you and have fun!

Thanks everyone! You have all confirmed my decsion!

I bought the Cosco one at Walmart for about $20. It says the weight limit if 40lbs - but I was pushing my dd around the house to test it out and it handled fine. I did have to take the canopy off. She was too tall to keep it on. The seat is also higher off the ground than an umbrella stroller so there is more leg room.

My kids were 5 and 7 when i went in January and I rented the double stroller to avoid them getting to fatigued and grumpy. Your their to have fun, not have tired kids. Besides, it gives you someplace to store your stuff when you park. We went to hershey park in July and I still rented a double stroller for both kids for the two days for the same reason.

You know, I get a bit tired now and then. Would one of you parents pushing your 6/7/8 yr old kids push me around a bit? I need to be saved from a meltdown, too.

What a timely post for me! I just bought my 6 1/2 year old a stroller yesterday (I knew that by the end of the day he'd be climbing all over his little sister trying to fit in her stroller, which she would not appreciate!). When I showed it to him he thought I was nuts, and said that he'd be the only one his age in a stroller! I told him we would bring it and he would only use it if he wants to (which I know he will, particularly when he sees other big kids in theirs).

Because of his size (47lbs and 47 inches), I did not buy a lightweight stroller -- instead, I bought a used full-size Graco at a consignment store and paid $30 instead of $100 new. We tried him in his sister's lightweight stroller and decided it was too hard to push, even though the weight limit on it is 40 lbs. I know that I will be tired when I push it and so I thought I would rather deal with the hassle of a larger and heavier stroller than tire myself out more than necessary. Also, it has a much larger basket (for rain gear, snacks, etc), and I figured that my daughter might nap in it and be more comfy than in her lightweight one.

We rented a stroller there for one of the days but my son who is almost 6 had no trouble walking for the most part....but we didn't "commando style" the parks either. In the summer the AK is so hot that it seems like a stroller is necessary. It was also nice to have on eride night when we wanted to criss-cross the park. I saw much older kids in the rented strollers - they are pretty heavy duty. He is almost 50lbs and fit with room to spare.

We have 3 kids under 5. The oldest is in the low 40 lb range and 44 inches. We have been using the double umbrella stroller which has been great. The oldest still wants to ride and we've noticed the wheels starting to wabble. We decided to fork over the money for a new city twinner by baby jogger. It is the lightest double stoller I've ever seen. It folds up decently and can handle 150lbs combined. We go to Disney every year so it will pay for itself by next summer.

Good luck.
