Stroller for 5 Year Old?

We will be taking my DDs in December - one will be just over 5 and the other will be 11 months. The baby will need a stroller with a recline for naps, so I don't think the park strollers are an option.
My plan is to rent a double from Orlando Stroller Rentals, but DH is worried she will want to walk and we'll end up pushing a double stroller around with one kid in it! My guess is that she'll get tired and want to ride.

Anyone have experience with this? She hasn't been in a stroller in a long time, and she's not particularly "bad" about walking/getting tired, but it is a lot of walking and I think we'd get around quicker if she rode.

Thanks!

I'd definitely get the stroller. I plan to track one down for my 5 year old DS for our upcoming trip, probably just rent another from OSR (we used them in March too). It's better to have the stroller and not need it than to need it and not have it. You can always use the extra seat for carrying stuff when the child is not in it. :thumbsup2

What about using your regular stroller for the baby and bringing an umbrella stroller for your 5 yr old? Disney sells a pretty decent umbrella stroller for aout $40. You could get one for your DD once you get there.

I agree with your DH I would hate dealing with a double stroller just for a 5 yr old. We have never used a stroller for our 5 yr olds ever, and we go from opening to closing.

I would go without one and if they aren't used to using one they won't even think to ask for one. and worst case you could rent one for that particular day if you really needed it.

the less stuff you have to push or carry thru your day the nicer it will be.

When we go in May, my DD will be turning 5 years old. We're renting a stroller from Orlando Stroller Rentals as well. If my 5 year old decides she wants to walk (which she will walk some, but I'm sure not 100% of the time) then that's fine. We can use her side of the stroller to store stuff in. If she wants to ride, then the stroller is there for her. She's going to see her little sister riding in the stroller (she'll be just shy of 2 when we go), and I'm sure she'll want to ride a little bit with her. They're buddies (for the time being, LOL).

I took my niece to WDW last fall when she was a week shy of her 5th birthday. We used a stroller. What we did was take her in it to an certain area, park the stoller and walk around and do that area of the park and then off to another area, ie. we took the stroller to Fantasy Land, parked it and did all the rides/attractions in Fantasy Land. We then loaded her up and went to Adventure Land. Parked the stroller and did every there, etc. It also came in handy at the end of the day when she was tired and just didn't want to walk back to the busses.

I am going to bring an umbrella type stroller for my 5 year old this year, but cannot find the one I want with underneath storage for a good price. I remember seeing the one they sell in the parks and resorts for about $40 and I believe they have the storage. Do you, or does anyone have a photo of what this stroller looks like? I would definately get it there if I can see what it looks like.

Thanks

Our oldest dd started each morning wanting to walk, she was almost 6 at the time, by afternoon she loved having the stroller. Have a great trip.

I have a similar issue...have an almost 5 y/o and a 1y/o. I'm bringing a double stroller. I know that when I take my DS1 out of the stroller, DD4 climbs in. LOL I also know how much walking there is to do in WDW...even though she never rides in one anymore, she'll want to there, at least some of the time.

Thought about buying a cheapo umbrella stroller, but thought about lugging 2 strollers on the bus. DH usually carries stroller, I will carry DS & bags, and help DD if she needs it...how can we carry 2 strollers & the baby, and the stuff?? Double stroller solves that problem.

And, like PP said, better to have & not need, then need & not have. I'm sure our bag will like to ride if she doesn't. LOL

The stroller is actually $50 (well, $49.99). We purchased at Boardwalk. I don't have pictures, but the storage is a big mesh net on the back, not an under stroller basket.

We just got back from WDW with our 2 almost 6yo boys. Last year I bought 2 MacLaren Volo strollers and they were life savers. We were on the fence this year, and they got used equally as much. We don't use the strollers at home - none in the last three years, but the boys LOVED them. And truthfully, so did we.

We also liked the convenience of two strollers, but then again they were umbrella strollers and our boys were older.

We have a 5 (almost 6) year old dd and a 4 year old ds and will bring a double stroller for sure! We loved the stroller last year, and when the kids feet got tired it was perfect!

I say definitely get the double stroller! Very few 5 year olds can go all day long ..maybe some, but the majority cannot.

We got a double stroller when my kids were 3 and 5, almost 5 and almost 7 and this year, we'll have a double for my 5 year old. I'm pretty sure 7 is just too old. He barely sat in it last year...he has adhd and sensory disorder so it was more for a quick "break" if he needed one.

My dd will definitely need one for afternoons. I rent it at the park.

I would take the stroller. I debated last Christmas when we went between two smaller strollers, our bulky sit-n-stand stroller and only one small stroller for our 2.5 y/o and 5.5. y/o. Our older child rode in the stroller more than the 2.5 y/o. He already asked us to bring one this year. We chose to take a medium-sized stroller and the when neither child was in it, it gave my back a break by hauling the backpack I carried. We'll do the same thing this year. Have a great trip!

whatever is easiest for you, but there is no way your 5 year old will want to walk at all times. The stroller will not be a waste. Just think of the whining, crying, holding, etc. you will happily be avoiding by having the option.

psssst....can you tell i am renting a stroller from Orlando Stroller rentals for my 5 year old? lol

I am going in November and taking my DS who just turned 6. I will be getting a stroller for him. He is not the norm so whenever we are even in the mall he wants to be carried....what a lazy butt. lol
In my un official Disney guide, it states that in Disney world on average you walk about 18 miles a day. So if I was you, I would get a stroller.

Plus if your daughter does not want to use the stroller you could use it for the diaper bag for the 11 month old. Or even use it to carry bags and stuff.

My ds (6) LOVES riding in the stroller to begin with. Our dd (2 almost 3) could live without it... except when DS is in it then she needs one too. We are going to Disney in 3 weeks and I have a umbrella stroller that I got at BRUS for her (has a small shade and storage room underneath plus a bag on the handles) for $19.99 and I bought a McClaren Volo on clearance for $89 in January for DS figuring when we go back in 3 years he will be out of it and she will use it. I'd say get two strollers , not the double. We have a double sit and stand but we aren't taking that.
