We leave in 3 days to celebrate my twin sons' 5th birthday in Disney World. My mom and dad are coming with us on this trip and are really looking forward to it. Today my one son came down with a fever of 101.4. He has no other symptoms at all besides the headache and fever. The children's motrin I gave him is making the fever go down and he is already feeling better...but now I am completely stressed out!!! I just don't know what this could be if it's just a fever and I'm hoping that it goes away ASAP!! I don't know, maybe I just needed to vent. I know I don't post a lot around here, but right now I am holding in all my fears about our trip and it feels better to "talk" about it.

If it was just me, DH and our kids I don't think I would be this stressed, but because my mom and dad are involved I just don't want to disappoint anybody. Just yesterday my mom said to me she was really looking forward to this and for the longest time we would joke about not getting excited about the trip because it always seems that once we get excited, things happen...

Thanks for "listening" to me and if anyone could give any kind of reassuring word I would really appreciate it :guilty:

Not to make you more paranoid but just to be on the safe side, you might want to get a doctor to do a flu test. We didn't have many symptoms when we were told we had H1N1. However, they gave us Tamiflu and it knocked it out immediately! Some doctors aren't even testing but our family doctor was doing the regular flu check and it sure was nice to knock it out. He said we were no longer contagious after taking Tamiflu for 2 days. Also, he gave my husband Tamiflu as well since we had exposed him to our wicked germs. Regardless of what it is, I hope you have a wonderful time in WDW. That place seems to have a way of making all the germs disappear!

Thank you so much for your response! I tried calling the pediatrician a little while ago, but I think they are at lunch because there was no answer. So I will try again in a little while. His fever has gone down a bit and he's acting normal - wanting to play and not being tired, etc... So this has got me really confused!! :confused3 Now I have to wait and see if his brother gets this too. Ugh! Leading up to this trip I have been so paranoid about this...oh well :(

My son started with a low grade fever Thursday night and started with the coughing Friday morning. Saturday morning his fever was 102.1 and he was aching so we brought him in to see the pediatrician. A few hours later we received a call saying he tested positive for Influenza Type A and was put on Tamiflu. My doctor also put me on Tamiflu since I am pregnant. He has not ran a fever since Saturday night, but still has some coughing. We leave for Disney in 6 days so I'm hoping no one else gets it. But I think you have made a wise decision to bring your child in to get tested. The earlier it is caught the faster your child will feel better.

Thanks! We have an appointment tomorrow morning to see the doc. Right now his fever is climbing back up and he's laying on the couch. My other son so far is doing ok, but typically it's not long after one gets sick that the other one gets it.

This just stinks! I always worry about this kind of thing and it has come true :(

It never fails that my DS gets some sort of fever or sickness right before we go on a trip. When we were going to DW last time he developed a fever and I took him in. (I wouldn't normally but I wanted to make sure it was not an ear infection) It turned out to be a 48 hour virus and he was fine before we left. They only checked him for strep at the time since he had no flu symptoms. It can't hurt to have your DS checked out by the pedi since you are leaving soon.

I would get him checked out soon as others have said. If there is a bright side you can get him checked out and feeling better before your trip... We've had a trip or two with someone coming down with something when we arrive... Even though the hotels are lovely its no fun being stuck in one while on vacation ;-) Hope he's feeling better soon.

I also have twins (b/g) who will be turning 5 soon. I know how much planning and excitement can go into your trip. Hang in there. Not much else you can do but wait and see. Remember to try to calm your stress so you don't get sick :) Good luck!

Dawn

It's so funny that I ran across this thread because I was about to post the exact same thing! My DH and I both feel so achey today. Last night for dinner we reheated some Spaghetti that was previously frozen. Well, it wasn't 5 hours after we ate it that DH was up throwing up and having diarehha. Then sure enough, I had the same thing happen to me:scared1:. And we leave tomorrow!!! It's either food poisoning or just a stomach bug but still. Why couldn't it have waited until we get back? It drives me crazy!!!! I have waited 3 years to go to Disney and then we get sick....Ahhhhh:sick::sad1::confused:

Thank you everyone! It helps to hear some positive stories about getting better. It just figures it would have to be 3 days before we leave!! Quinns-mommy - I am so sorry to hear about your stomach bug!! I really hope you are feeling better and you can leave for your trip tomorrow and have a wonderful time!

I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to see what the pedi says. I was supposed to pack today and haven't even done that. I'm just crossing my fingers that we can still go since this is supposed to be their birthday trip.

As crazy as this sounds I do have some "good" news! I finally talked DH into going to an Urgent Care facility last night and it is ONLY the stomach virus that "supposedly" lasts only about 24 hours so.... we should be good! We had to go to 3 different pharmacies last night at 9:30pm to find his medicine but we got it!:cool1: So, he had a good nights rest and is up moving around a little this morning. Yay!!! So, as soon as I get off at 12, I'm rushing home to pick him and DS up and we're headed out! Now I just hope that I don't come down with the same bug!:scared1:

Quinns-mommy, I know you are probably gone already but I hope you have (had) a great trip! Hopefully you didn't catch that bug!

We just got back from the pedi and he looks ok. His ears, throat, nose, lungs are all clear and no swollen glands or anything! It's just a fever. She did say that she has seen other cases like this and the fever lasts about 2-3 days and there are no other symptoms and then it just goes away. Weird! But she also mentioned that if he still has a fever by tomorrow evening then we should bring him in again just to make sure nothing has developed in the meantime and that way we know if it's ok to fly. I just hate cutting it so close!! Especially with my parents relying on us.

So all I can hope for now is that his fever goes away by tomorrow and his brother doesn't get the same thing. Talk about stressing up until the last minute!!

My son had the same thing about 2 wks ago. All he had was a fever for about 24 hrs. and a headache. It started Friday night ended Saturday night. I took him to the DR on Saturday they saw nothing said if he starts coughing on Monday start his asthma meds and call if it don't help. On Sunday we had a Kidney Walk he did fine no problems, he didn't want to miss it. On Monday he started a cough and by Wednesday the cough was gone.
Whatever it is going around it didn't last you should be fine, no one else in the house got it. Have Fun!

We leave in 10 days and my son just got sick last night. He has a fever, cough and just looks feverish. I took him right away to an after care place so I could get the Tamaflu for him. Well - they tested him for strep to rule that out. They would not test him for the flu because it can be anywhere from 10% - 60% inaccurate. Plus even if he tested positive, the doctor said that the CDC recommends NOT treating his age group with Tamaflu - he is 7 and not high risk.

The recommended treatment is alternating tylenol and motrin every 3 hours. I just hope that we have contained him in time and my other two do not get sick. There have been a bunch of kids in his class that have been sick...I would have saved the trip to the doctor if I knew they wouldn't give him Tamaflu.

Antree - thank you so much! It really helps to hear other stories like this to ease my mind a bit.

Ashlander - that stinks! I hope your son gets better quickly and nobody else gets it! It's really stressful when these things happen so close to leaving.

Apparently, when I was little I always got sick while on vacation, so my mom has been trying to joke with me that this is my payback! This is one trait I wish they didn't inherit from me!

Please give us your positive report once you have gone on vacation and had a great trip!!!

Hi all! We just got back home tonight. We all had a great time and my sons had a wonderful birthday! My one son's fever was gone the morning we had to leave and the other one was still doing ok, but he did develop a fever once we got to resort. The weird thing was, by that night the fever was gone and he was fine! They both did develop a cough, but nothing else...very strange. I'm just happy that we were still able to enjoy our vacation. Thanks for the positive thoughts everyone!!
