We fly out Sat. morning...and today I get confirmation that DS (7) has Strep. :crazy2: So, we started the antibiotics...I hope the flights go OK for him and us. DH and I both have colds...hello decongestants for the flights. My child hardly ever gets sick...and so he ends up sick right before the most awesome March Break ever...:sad2:

Poor guy. The good news is he'll probably feel a lot better within a few hours of starting the antibiotics :-)

Tylenol and ibuprofen can go a long way toward easing the throat pain too.

my son woke up with a sore throat on the 22nd, the 23rd i took him in and found out it was strep. started antibiotics that night, he wakes up on the 24th like nothing ever happened! :)

Two of mine have strep right now. Yesterday they were miserable, 101 fevers, started antibiotics. Today, one played baseball, the other played tennis. I bet he'll be fine by Saturday. Hope you and husband feel better!

Here is some pixiedust: to go with that antibiotic! Wishing you all well and a wonderful time at the world!:dance3:

How long do you have to be on the antibiotics to not be contagious?

You're only considered contagious for 24 hours. My DD17 was sick this week, saw the doctor Tuesday, went on antibiotics (ear infection), and was told she could go back to work Wed. I kept her home, just because I wanted her to rest an extra day. She works with children, so if she were contagious, believe me, nobody would want her there!

As to the trip, just make extra-sure everyone is comfortable for the flight. Tylenol, decongestants, etc. My poor DD, we flew down to Baltimore (college visit) last weekend, right before she was diagnosed. She was quite uncomfortable on the flight.

I would also try to take things easy on that first day, especially if you guys are up at the crack of dawn to catch your flight. Save the late-night fireworks and EMH for later in the week, when everyone will hopefully be 100%.

For strep throat, you are no longer contagious after being on antibiotics for roughly 24 hours. Of all the sicknesses you can get, I think it is probably the best because it is usually very easy to treat and recover from quickly.

After a day of antibiotics, it won't slow him down a bit!!

It will still be the best March Vacation Ever!!

Note that a cold is still contagious as long as you have symptoms, so be aware that you'll be spreading that cold to all the people trapped with you for hours on the plane...and potentially ruining their travel/work/vacations.

Zicam, REST, lots of fluids (hot tea, water, juice - and no, soda does not count), chicken soup - it's not just an old wives' tale...it really does have healthy properties...make your best effort to kick the cold not only for you and your family but to be courteous to other people who really don't want to be sick. If it were me I'd bring antibacterial hand wipes and/or hand sanitizer and consider wearing a mask when on the plane. I'd feel terrible about spreading a cold to 150 other people.

Hope you all recover promptly and have a good trip.

I agree. DS7 is home from school today with strep, and we leave in 8 days for our Disney trip. I will be holding my breath that none of the others get it!

But honestly, I'd rather him have strep that is quick and treatable. I had a cold a couple weeks ago that was long-lasting and miserable. Not much you can do for that other than OTC meds and time.

I guess it's going around everywhere! Saying a little prayer for you that no one else gets it. Have a wonderful trip!

When you're sick, if you're having symptoms, then you're still contagious. Antibiotics don't change that. I had strep throat a couple years ago and I ate garlic all day (garlic has antibiotic properties) and the white patches in my throat and the soreness was gone the next day. I hope he's better for your trip!! Have fun!

Take some vitamin C for your colds also. Give your immune system a bit of an extra boost. I would consider wearing the masks also to spare others your germs.

Where are you getting this info? Everything I've read/heard about strep says you are no longer contagious after 24 hours on antibiotics. The bacteria is no longer passed after that time.

Strep is caused by bacteria not virus! 24 hours of antibiotics and your not contagious. You could however have a viral cold at the same time as strep, that is not fixed by antibiotics.

Strep has an incubation of 2-5 days from when its contracted, you may want to ask your doctor for a "just in case" someone else gets it prescription

DD got strep the day before we left for Disney last year. Luckily our doctor is also our neighbor, so we got her going on antibiotics pretty quickly. She was fine the day we left for Disney and the rest of the trip, but did complain of ear pain when we landed in MCO and her ears took a while to pop after we landed. Good luck and have fun! Make sure to have some gum handy for the plane. I second the just in case prescription, as that is what we did for our younger DD.

I never said strep was caused by a virus, so I'm not sure why you quoted me and then posted this response. If you were posting to agree with what I said, sorry, your post was unclear.

I will be the first to admit that I am no longer a kid... just a kid at heart. However, the last time couple of times I had strep, it took a good 3-4 days after the antibiotic to get my energy back. I also have, in the past, pushed myself too hard while recovering from one illness only to end up with something else. So, while your child might feel better, I would take it a bit easier the first couple of days. Lots of liquids and additional rest.
