Hi,

DD10's face broke out in some rash a week and a half ago. I took her to the doctor who said to come back by Friday if it was still there - she saw no signs of strep even though there was no test. Anyway, by Wednesday she had a fever (off hours of course). I took her to the walk in clinic and even though the rapid strep test came back negative, the Dr. still treated her for strep because he had every other reason to believe it was. So after five days of azythromyacine (sp?), she's feeling fine (although tired) and the rash is no longer on her arms and legs, but is still on her face (it was getting better, but last night, it seemed to flare up a little). Does anyone know how long this takes to clear? The Dr's office isn't open yet and DD returns to school from vacation this week. Any info would be great. Thanks!

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on the Dis! Love it. No really the rapid strep test came back negative. No culture was grown from the clinic I assume b/c 1. they already gave you an ATB script and 2. didn't call you to confirm a positive strep culture. The rash sounds viral. Scary from the looks of them usually but can only let it run it's course and treat symptoms like aches and fever. Hope your DD is feeling better.

The clinic does send them out, but since they treat them probably won't call to confirm. Thanks for the info, though.

They should call you and let you know if it comes back positive (even though you are on abx). If it is negative they will not call you.

My daughter has suffered with a strep related rash since January.

She's been back and forth to her pediatrician (two rounds of meds to finally rid the body of the strep virus) and to the dermatologist for steroid creams to help diminish the rash.

The dermatologist says that sometimes it takes months for the body to rid itself of the psoriasis (sp?) associated with the strep virus.

We have had a couple cases of Fifth disease in DD's class... Sore throat/cough followed by a rash on the arms and legs and on the face looks like a "slap"... could that be it? If so, it's a virus... and there is nothing you can do but wait it out. (By the time the rash shows up they are no longer contagious)

This is what I was going to ask, especially since the rash seems to get better and worse. This seems like the season for Fifth disease. The rash on the arms/legs is usually lacy and the face looks more like a slap or sunburn.

Is the rash sort of like hives? DD8 has had issues since she was 3...everytime she had strep, she'd get a rash..that first year, 5 times in one year. Now, even if she just has a virus, she'll get a rash first, on her stomach normally, but if its bad it goes to her face, legs and arms. Dr. said just the way her body handles the illnesses. I normally give her bendryl and it'll go away in a few days, depending on how severe it is.

My DGD had a Strep related rash last month. She had been vomiting sowe thought it was the stomach bug. SHe developed the rash that evening so my DD took her to the pediatrician. He said that even though she had no sore throat or fever that she indeed had strep.
