I went to Redi-Med Christmas Eve and tested positive for strep throat. I came here for some advice on how to ease the the throat pain. I been taking 600 mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours, garggling with warm salt water, drinkingwarm tea, and eating popsicles and the pain is still unbearable at times. I feel like a whimp. Any good home remedies?

TIA

Are you taking an antibiotic yet? You really need to, if you haven't started.

My son used to get strept throat every year, and we basically did what you're doing now.

I'm so sorry you're in pain.

Are you on antibiotics? I'm assuming you are (probably amoxicillin). If you have been taking the antibiotics since Christmas Eve, you should be feeling a lot better. I would call the doctor back at this point.

There is a lidicaine mouthwash that the pharmicist can make up, but you have to have a prescription for it.

If you're taking the meds, you the pain should start to ease very soon. It sounds like you're doing all the right things. A few years ago on the day after Thanksgiving, I felt cruddy and took a nap on the couch. I remember waking up later with the worst sore throat I'd ever had in my entire life! I went to Urgent Care and found out I had strep. The pain was almost unbearable, just like you described. I remember it hurting for most of the weekend and wondering if I would even be able to go back to work on Monday. I recall that I did go back to work but the weekend was pretty miserable.

I'd advise just hanging in there. Don't let your throat get dry. It will feel better if it's kept moist. Keep drinking, eating popsicles, lemon drops or throat lozenges. The pain should ease up soon. Hope you feel better!:)

Last time I had strep I had to take percocet for the pain. Regular ibuprofen wasn't touching it. Even then, I could only drink milkshakes and smoothies for 2 days, because swallowing anything else was just too painful. It took about 48 hours on antibiotics before my throat pain began to significantly lessen.

Yes I am on antibiotics. Today when I talked to the nurse she said it takes about 72 hours for the pain to go away. That will be tommorrow morning:cheer2: I have tried the Chloraseptic cough drops but that doesn't even touch it, is the spray better?

The thing that worked best for me was either freezing cold ice water or freezing cold Coke with plenty of ice.

Wanted to add: Make sure you change you toothbrush. We boil ours every other day or so once we start the antibiotics, and then throw it out, and get a new once once we complete them.

Old home remedy: gargle a mixture of warm water, salt and vinegar. It should taste like warm pickle juice. Hope you feel better soon.

YES! The spray feels weird and tastes icky but it really does help!! When I was first teaching I caught strep 7 times in a 9 mo. period, and my dr. finally said my tonsils had to come out. Haven't had strep since!!!

Oh and you can make home-made slushies, those feel good too - 2 popsicles and some 7-up or Sprite, mix in the blender and ta-da you have a home-made slushie!!

I can sympathize. I would rather give birth than have strep, which I had again at the end of October.

You should start feeling better soon.

I agree, well the coke part any way, Water actually irritates my throat when it is soar, on the coke issue, I actually just put the can or bottle in the fridge and let it get cold, the fizz hitting your soar throat hurts so good.

I had a sore throat that went on for an extended period and my doc gave me some painkillers and steriods:eek: The steroids were these little tiny pills and the regimen was 6 pills the first day, 5 the next, 4 the following day..and so on.

Those steroids took care of the pain almost immediately, and in time the anitbiotics worked their magic.

Dunno if a doc-in-the-box would prescribe something like this, but my family doc did it for me.

Hope you feel better soon.

I suck on crushed ice cubes. I get the ice as far back in my throat as I can and let it melt there for a few seconds. It numbs the throat for a bit. It's enough to help me fall asleep at night. I keep a cup of crushed ice by my bed when I have a sore throat.

Also, you can freeze a carton of yogurt and then spoon it out slowly and eat it. At least while you are eating it, your throat will feel good.
