strep or not?

last summer, ds5 (then 4) had his first (so far) only case of strep throat. I don't have any experience with strep outside of that. he wouldn't eat/drink, ran a fever of around 102.5, and was generally miserable.

now for my current dilemma. on friday, he woke up fine, and within an hour of waking up, he just was not well. wouldn't eat, would barely drink (was able to push some fluids, but not very much), said his throat hurt. he took 2 long naps in his bed and spent the rest of the time on the couch...both very unlike him, even when he isn't feeling well. He ran a fever, only around 101.8. I called the peds who said that it was too early for the rapid strep test to work, so to wait a day or so. next morning he was much better for a couple of hours, still wouldn't eat much, but spirits better and no fever. throughout the day that changed...fever spiked, but again low grade, he got clingy and not quite himself, but no laying around, still said his throat hurt. last night we put him to bed and he woke up an hour or so later in a sweat (we had given him tyelnol, btw), his fever gone.

this morning he seems fine again, although still says his throat hurts. he did, however, eat 2 pancakes for breakfast and drank a big glass of milk. no fever, at least so far.

so my dilemma is, does this sound like a normal virus that has just settled in his throat? or does it sound like strep? at this point the rapid strep test should work, but the peds doesn't have sunday hours. I could call the oncall dr. and see if they would come in to test, but I hate to do that. but then, with school tomorrow, I'd hate to either send DS if he really does end up having strep, but would also hate to keep him home if he's really fine.

any thoughts?

You said his throat still hurts, so he really isn't "fine".
Even if he doesn't have strep, I don't think he's well enough to be in school.

With all that's happened in the past few days, I definitely don't think he should be going to school tomorrow (I'm a teacher & have issues with kids like this coming to school). We also have a policy of kids being "fever-free") for 24 hours, so if he runs a fever again today, then that would cinch it for me.

Tomorrow, I would take him to the doctor, no matter what.
He should be tested for strep.

I consider myself the queen of strep. I used to get it 2-3 times a school year,(but somehow have avoided it the past 2 years). It usually makes me so sick that I'm almost unconscious, but one time, I felt almost fine. I went in to the doctor anyway & it was strep. It was so unusual for me to be feeling "almost well" but have strep anyway.

Do you have any kind of "Nighttime Pediatric" place that is open on weekends?

BTW, 4 out 5 times the rapid strep test does not work on me,
My doctor knows this, always gives me the antibiotic anyway, & then after culturing my test for 24 hours, it will come up positive. One time, when strep had me the sickest I EVER was, the test didn't show up positive until 48 hours later. The nurse told me that is pretty "rare".

I hope your DS is totally well soon.

thanks. I went ahead and called the on call ped and am waiting for a call back.

how annoying that the rapid strep doesn't work for you, but good that your dr. gives you the meds.

'tis the season for strep and my kids used to get it repeatedly at this time of year. I notice you live in mass so the weather etc is not helping you. It has been my experience if the kids wake up and suddenly take sick with a sore throat and fever then it is strep 99% or at least in my kids cases it was. Another symptom is headache centering between the eyes but in kids they do not usually present the same way every time.

Do not let them do the Rapid Strep test either make them do the one where they grow the culture.

My 2 dd's had strep 20 times between them in 1 year so I feel like an expert, lol. My #1 dd used to vomit for 24-36 hours when she had strep-never had a sore throat, just red eyes and the pukes(sorry if TMI!) My younger dd had headaches and sometimes a sore throat. I can now recognize the smell of strep:scared1: Both girls had their tonsils out and haven't had it since until last week. Younger dd and my ds both seemed to feel a bit sick. DD said her throat hurt and ds had a headache and then threw up. They both seemed fine the next day but I just had a feeling it was strep and I was right. In fact, while waiting for the Dr, DD came over to me and all of a sudden I smelt that"smell":sad2: Anyway, I would get him tested even if he seems better. Beeter safe athan sorry.

well, we took him in and yep, its strep. I feel rotten, if I had not hesitated and taken him in on saturday, he would have been able to go to school tomorrow. he's going to be sad to have to miss it. sigh. oh well, now I know.

interesting about the smell. we were checking on him last night and dh and I both said he had sick breath.

now just keeping an eye on the twins to see if they pick it up. fingers crossed that they don't!

Glad you were able to get him seen today & that he's on meds now.

Don't worry, missing one day of school won't matter...just try to make it a fun day at home!

Don't feel badly about it, it might not have shown up on Saturday.

My DD gets strep infections and her only symptom is a belly ache. It's never easy trying to figure out when to take her in.

Hope he's feeling better soon!

omg, on friday he said his tummy hurt! I figured he was a wee bit constipated or was simply hungry from not eating. he said it felt better on saturday. that is very interesting...is it typical of strep?

I'm filing that in my mom book of knowledge, then. interesting. I had no idea. but now I do, and if it ever comes up again I will keep strep in mind. thanks!

If you look on WebMD there's a lot of info on strep.

Make sure you either replace all of the toothbrushes in your house or run them through the dishwasher, and thoroughly clean the holders with lysol spray cleaner.

Don't beat yourself up. I took both kids in Tuesday- ds tested positive for strep... dd negative. They called Thursday and said dd's culture came back positive. She'd been working for 2 days because Tuesday they said she had "a cold". Oh well. We do our best as Moms.
