received an e-mail about streamlining our check-in. they text you the room number and you go right to your room skipping the front desk. i thought they had to activate your magic bands at the front desk when you check-in. i assume the bands are already activated when you receive them. when did they start doing this. or am i reading the e-mail wrong.

Direct-to-room online check-in has been available for quite a few months. Maybe since last Spring?

MagicBands are active when you receive them.
 
I was able to go straight to my room upon arrival at the end of February last year.

When i landed in Orlando, I had a text on my phone with my room number and location. As long as you've done everything you need/want to do online - like create a PIN and add a credit card for charging and check in - you can go to your room and unlock your door with your Magicband. Then head straight for your next destination! Have a great trip!
 
We just got home and we had issues with the credit card on the magic bands. We did online check in with our pin and a credit card, but when we tried to charge the first time it said that we didn't have charging privileges. When we checked at the front desk, there was no card on file even though the Disney app said there was. Luckily our first charge was at the food court at the hotel so we had to go back to our room to get the card and go to the front desk. They stated that this is a known problem.

I've had this issue more than not with CC info not transferring to resort computer system
 
We did direct to room online check in when we were there in November and we never received a text. So, for us, it didn't work, but I know for many people it has. It's great if you can go straight to your room and not have to stop anywhere first.
 
I would stop by the front desk to make sure your charging privileges and the like are correct - both times since we've been with Magic Bands it hasn't worked out for us.
 
Be aware that even if you sign up for text notification, it may not come. We got a text last July with our room number, but never received one a couple weeks ago, even though the room was ready when we arrived.
 
Both times we tried this, once no text at all, second was informed we had to go to the front desk anyway.
