Strategies for booking long in advance

We are planning our next trip for September 18-26, 2004, and I think we have settled on the Polynesian, concierge (concierge is a splurge for us but it is our tenth anniversary). Part of me would love to get a reservation made-- pay a deposit, and get myself mentally committed to the trip and prepared for the bill. Since we are going in September, the chances are decent that some sort of discounts will become available by late Spring, and given Disney's recent marketing trends those will probably be some sort of package deal. So. I know with booking room only you can book now and apply a code later, cancel with no penalities, and so forth. What about packages? If I book a basic Dream Maker package for my dates now, and something equivalent of FTP comes out later, can I just adjust the ressie? And if a better room-only code becomes availabile, can I cancel the package and book that? The way I'm reading it is that the package is fully refundable, deposit and all, up to 45 days out. I really am excited about making a ressie, even 373 days in advance, but I don't want to do it if it is bad booking strategy.

Thanks for your input.

Book now at rack rates. Get peace of mind. ;)

You can always add the reduced rate codes later. It does not affect your reservation other than to lower the cost.

I booked at rack rate... then renewed my DC membership and lowered my cost by about 400.00, then the Fairy tale package came out so I called again and the price went down... then there was a canadian dollar at par special I added for my last 3 nights...

The reservations people are happy to make the changes - and you will have your reservations all secure from day one.

If you use Dreams Unlimited or Magical Journey's travel agencies to book your trip, it won't cost you to use their services and they will watch for deals for you and let you know if you can get a better rate for your trip. That way your trip is booked, you can start paying for it now, but if a better rate or package comes out they will switch it for you. You don't have to chase rates or worry if you miss something, you're covered by someone who does this stuff everyday! It's really made planning my Sept 2004 trip much better and less worriesome.
