I recently took my DS13 for a ride on the Strasburg Railroad, in Lancaster County PA, which is in the heart of the PA Amish farm country. Here are just a few of the many pictures I took with my trusty Canon S3:

Getting ready to fill the tender with water from the water tower. You can see the big pile of coal, also in the tender. The fireman shovels about a 1/2-ton of coal for each 45 min. journey out-and-back!

The Strasburg RR is the only place in America where two fully-operational steam locomotives meet and pass each other!

Here's the other train accelerating away from the meeting junction.

Corn and tobacco fields, mostly Amish farms, make up the gorgeous scenery as you roll by at a leisurely 45 mph:

Watch out for the train! It has to reverse direction to get back to "front" of the train to pull out the next load of passengers:

Looks like you had fun.... There must have been great photo opportunities with that scenery... Thanks for sharing... :thumbsup2

Awesome pictures !!!!.. I was hoping to see my friend Mark in one of your pictures... he is one of the conductors for the Strasburg Railroad ... He has two passions affectionately referred to as Old Iron ... Those steam engines and old Harleys. When we were still in high school he used to dismantle his Harley for the winter and reassemble it in his bedroom .. on the second floor of his parents home:scared1: ... come spring he would take it apart again and reassemble it in the garage for a new season of riding.

Thanks for sharing .. south central Pennsylvania has some of the most beautiful farmland in the country :) This time of year I love hopping the car and going for a ride past the Amish farms of Lancaster County. I live one county to the west near York.

Strasburg is a must see for any train fan. I took my son back in his Thomas phase. The museum across the street is great as well.

The train ride takes you through Amish country.

We were all fascinated with the snow plow.

This engine reminded me of a model train I had as a kid.

Awesome pictures !!!!..

Thanks for the compliment! :goodvibes

Hmmm, I only got one picture of a conductor. Is this friendly fellow your friend? :)

We live in Dauphin Co., so it's only a short ride down Rt 30. Development is slowly encroaching on them ... I sincerely hope the Amish (and any other farmer who happens to be farming there) can keep their lovely farms operating for a long, long time!! :goodvibes

We sure did ... Lancaster County is really lovely. Thanks to the Amish, it really still looks like much of the US must have looked years and years ago.!

You can pretty much point your camera in any direction and there's something interesting or nice to take a picture of! :lmao:

We've been there, too! They have some fantastic displays; beautifully restored engines and rolling stock! Even the "rusty stuff" out in the yard is amazing!

We didn't have time to visit this trip, though. I plan to take DS13 back in a couple of weeks ... he loves trains! :cloud9:

Aah, this brings back memories! Years ago we took our kids on this train. What a great vacation!

Nope sorry thats not him. My friend is a little younger than the guy you have pictured.

I agree with you totally about the farmland remaining farmland. I hope the Amish are able to hang onto their farms and way of life for a long time to come. Too many of the beautiful farms around here and in York Co. have been sold off and made into developments. There is another farm being auctioned this weekend about 3 miles from here and I hope it goes to someone going to keep it as a farm and not for development.

Truly a great trip. Up the road is the TCS toy train museum.
