Okay this started a little over a month ago. My tongue feels like I burned it. Constantly. But I didn't. It lasted about a week or so, some times of the day were worse than others. But it went away for maybe 2 weeks and it feels like it is starting up again. It is the most bizarre feeling like I said, as if I just drank a cup of really hot coffee or something. It is not as bad as it was a couple weeks ago (yet) but I brush it, use a Water Pik on it but it is driving me crazy.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do you call your dentist or regular family Dr. about it. Thanks for any info.

The most common cause of this is B12 deficiency.

Another cause is a low-level dry mouth.

give your dentist a call. sounds like it could be burning mouth syndrome, but there are quite a few causes including the ones Christine mentioned.

I would definitely see a doctor or dentist. Unless someone looks at your tongue and cultures it there's just no way to determine what it is. There's such a wide variety of mouth illnesses, You could have anything ranging from a yeast infection to foot and mouth to what the pp mentioned to herpes (of which there are many forms).

If you think it is some kind of infection I would recommend replacing your toothbrush daily so as to not keep reinfecting your tongue.

I have to admit I had something like that; my whole tongue was red and then after a couple of days it looked like it was blistered and it was very sore. It spread until my whole mouth was covered in blisters. Turns out it was a rare form of herpes.

Could also be food allergies - my tongue does that when I eat spicy food, as I'm mildy allergic to hot peppers. My tongue will tingle/feel burned, and my lips will get itchy, then peel. I know, sounds lovely, doesn't it, but I love my spicy food!

I have a friend who is allergic to walnuts and this is how she describe the start of her reaction (which is a mild allergy compared to others in her family)She can eat any other nuts but this one. Can you think of something new you may have eaten and had the reaction right after that?
