a few weeks ago I posted about the lady I saw walking in the neighborhood near my office, the one with the platinum beehive hairdo, the one who looked like she'd be more at home standing next to Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Winokur than wandering around the financial district. turns out, it wasn't a costume -- the lady actually works for my company, I've seen her in the elevator a few times.

yesterday I saw another weird sight, this time on the subway. it was 130 in the afternoon. the guy must have been in his late 50's. he was wearing jeans and a patriotic t shirt. his gray hair was all mussed. he was carrying several plastic shopping bags, the kind you get from the supermarket, but it looked as if the bags had been used several times. he got onto the subway and sat down next to a well-dressed woman. she immediately got up and went to stand near the door. next thing I knew, he was taking a paper bag out of one of the plastic bags, and there was a bottle inside the paper bag. he took a long drink, then put the bottle away. but what happened next is what blew me away. he reached into the bag again and took out a package of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter." he opened tha package, unwrapped one of the sticks of "butter" and began eating it!

later I was walking through Chelsea and saw a strange looking couple. actually, she wasn't strange, just a bit Goth -- black hiphuggers, black button down shirt, her hair tucked into a black cap. but he...well, he was wearing trousers in a color I can only think of as "dusty rose", and pale green jacket, and a black fedora on his head. and all I could think of was "A Clockwork Orange."

I lead such a sheltered life...... and I like it that way! ;)

As we say here in New York...... "only in New York" I have worked in Manhattan for over 20 years, lived in Manhattan for 4 years.. and life happenings here never seem faze me anymore.

I agree, joeokw. It is the unlimited array of characters and personalities and cultures and venues which make NYC so magnificent.

Last week I took my son into Manhattan to see an Off-Broadway production: Fairy Tales of the Absurd. Two plays by Ionesco (translated by Einhorn) and one by Einhorn himself, were featured.

Two weeks earlier, my son attended a special cooking class at ICE (the Institute for Culinary Education). It was to teach tweens how to prepare a full breakfast and lunch.

At other times this year, we were in the city for programs and shows at The New Victory Theatre, a sleepover at The Central Park Zoo (actually last December), a special building experience with The Lego Master Model Builders Team at the tremendous TRU on Broadway at 44th/45th Street, a members-only tour of the new "History of Chocolate" exhibit at The American Museum of Natural History as well as a private chocolate-making class headed by a master chef from Godiva and blah blah blah.

However, the common (and most important) ingredient in all these ventures is good ole NEW YORK CITY itself - which gives all these venues the opportunity to not just exist, but thrive...

Buckaroo's dad, do you want a daughter?

BR, I wish I could locate the picture of the pink duct tape lady that I took on one of my visits to NYC a few years ago. Remember that one, BR? I posted it. She was like around 60'ish, all dresses in flamboyant pink and green clothes, standing on he sidewalk with a very old, pink Lambretta (I think, maybe Vespa) motor scooter, all held together with pink duct tape. I was walking by, camera in hand (naturally) and I asked her if I could take her picture. She said, 'sure'. She primped a bit, posed and I took it. It was non digital and therefore not easy for me to find, LOL. Rememver, BR? Wonder if anyone else does, LOL.

Those are funny, BR, such strange sites in NYC. :teeth:

Texas can be wierd at times too but your last expierence is up there. At least we have the Killer Ds and the Texas legilsature for amusement.

he-he - thanks for posting stuff like this BR! Those of us in suburbia forget what the "big city" is like. (I always feel like a true country bumpkin when I go into San Francisco!)

Oh, my. That reminds me of someone my brother saw when he was in NYC. While riding the subway he noticed a woman who was wearing what had to have been a wig that looked like it was made out of drain hair and bits of paper. And if that wasn't bad enough he said it was a bright orange/pink color.

"People watching" can be a great source of entertainment and you don't even need to buy a ticket! It kind of makes you feel better when you look in the mirror... most of the time, anyhow.

You are so right! I love to do this particularly at the airport.

Thanks for posting these BR. I think I see strange things in downtown St. Louis, but they don't really compare to your stories. But then those of us in the midwest are usually about 10 years behind! ;) That may not be all a bad thing! Lol:D

We saw something strange at Disney (EPCOT) our last visit and I'm still not sure what it was.

DH & I had noticed a couple of women wearing those bras where the straps are a see-through type plastic (not sure what). We only saw them because they were sticking out of their shirts on their shoulders. Well, one night we saw a guy, but only from the back, and he had those straps - on both shoulders! His legs looked like guy legs and so did his body, but why on earth would he be wearing a bra??? DH & I tried to catch up with him to take a (discreet) peek, but we couldn't get him and the kids weren't cooperating. Stilll not sure what to think of that...
