Strange Rituals

I also have to put my shoes on right foot first then left, but my pants left leg first then right. If I do it the opposite way, it feels weird and I have to redo it. Gotta go...the nice people from the looney bin are here to pick me up.

Ok, well, send them my way when they are done picking you up. Because I do the same thing. I never realized it before.

I also hold my breath going past a cemetery. There is a large one on the way from my house to Brooklyn. I used to try to hold my breath going past it (on my way back to the college dorms) until I got stuck in traffic. Traffic? On the BQE you say? Never! ;)

I wipe my hands. A lot. I hate the feel of greasy, dirty hands. Whenever I eat french fries I end up wiping my hands after about every fry. I don't even realize I do it. Wow, I'm weird.

I have never held my breath passing a cemetary but I did when we went through tunnels. I also pick my feet up when going over railroad tracks and kiss my hand and slap it on the ceiling of my car when driving through a yellow light!!!

I pick my feet up and tell the children too when driving through a puddle - so we won't get our feet wet ;) just like my dad did when I was a young'un.

The only time we hold our breath is when we go under water - when we drive under the water bridge near the Contemporary! :)

I never heard of lifting your feet at RR tracks before! Looks like quite a few people have heard of this!

We kiss our hands and slap the ceiling of the car when we are passing through a yellow light.

We say "rabbit, rabbit rabbit" when we are sitting around the campfire and smoke drifts into our faces.

When stopped at red lights, the kids holler "alacazoo, alacazam, turn to green when I clap my hands." You know what, it always works - my kids think they are magic. :wizard: If the light doesn't change right away, it must be a stubborn one. Usually mom can get it to change right away after she does it (because I watch for the light to turn red going the other direction :rotfl2: ).

I was once told to say "I Love Monkey's" when the smoke was in your face at the campfire. A few years later my neighbors were over for a campfire and she learned "I Love Rabbits". :rotfl2:

We sometimes duck going under bridges and tunnels, mostly just for fun.

We used to say padiddle and slap the ceiling of the vehicle when meeting a car with a headlight out. I haven't taught my kids that yet, maybe I don't travel enough at night with them.

Note to self, don't take baby around DisUNC when he buys lottery tickets :lmao:

:lmao: LUCKY BABY BUTT! :cheer2:
BTW It's not a naked butt...one with the diapers on! My Nana even did this with Grandpas pay envelope!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, I also say 'rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" only when I wake up on the first day of the month. You will have luck all month long.

:rotfl: I learned "I hate white rabbits" when the smoke was in your face :rotfl: How bizarre

We always held our breathe when we went past a cemetary too -- something about having your breathe stolen if you don't.

We also hold our breathe when we go under the tunnel near the Contemporary -- after all, we are going under water.

My Mom taught us to shake the salt shaker over our shoulder if we knocked over the shaker -- to get rid of bad luck.

We rub the heads of the gargoyles in Haunted Mansion.

And finally, we alway, always rub Cinderella's slipper in the Castle at least once during every trip to Disney World. Something about connecting with those that have come before us and those that will come after us.

I was also taugh the I love Bunnys.

Another one - say - fuzzy bunny - when you are sneezing to get you to stop.

Growing up on the school bus we liftes the fit and touched a screw when going over railroad tracks. But I don't do that now...

I had a sorority sister in college (in OHIO) that was from Michigan and her family were huge Michigan fans. That when they drove through COlumbus they were taught to raise their feet and plug their noses. I always thought that was funny!

Me, too! My kids think (know) I'm crazy, but it's all in fun.

I like to yell "duck" when entering a tunnel.

We do the "slug bug" thing, but only with the old beetles.

I learned it as "Dead rabbit!" You repeat it and the smoke is supposed to drift away, right?! :)

Of COURSE we yell, "MOO" at the cows. Never thought of that as "strange." I thought EVERYONE yelled "MOO" at cows. :confused3 :teeth:

We did that when I was young too; I always thought it was pretty dumb, until I noticed that the floorboards of the car were actually rotted through, and you could see the road go by under as we drove along...

We kiss our hand and slap the ceiling of the car and make a wish when going under a yellow traffic light.

We always say "moo" when passing a cow. :rotfl: Dont have any idea why we do that.

If I see a penny on the ground, I will only pick it up if it's on "heads", otherwise, it's bad luck.

That lottery ticket thing...do you think my boss would look at me funny if I bought a bunch and took them to work to rub on the babies butts? :rotfl2:
I'm a peds nurse...I've got lots of babies to rub the tickets on.

I do that too! Did you get that from reading Trixie Belden mystery books?

Laugh... when I was VERY small we did that... then we got a Golden retriever that went EVERYWHERE with us. She would get so excited when we pointed out cows... horses didn't interest her... only COWS (and bales of hay we CALLED cows.. :rotfl: ). So now when we go by cows ... 35 years later... Libby is LONG gone... we all say "Look at the cows... Look at the cows"... even my husband ... who never knew Libby says it.... Once on vacation we were staying in a cabin that had a cow behind it ... poor Libby was freaked out seeing one up close... she preferred them from the car.

Used to have a neighbor girl who always said "Hi Girls" going by cows... so when she was with us it was "Look at the cows... Look at the cows... Hi Girls"

We do the slug bug/and the bruiser for a cruiser... must be the only "punch" word that goes w/PT cruiser. BUT you have to shout the color of the car too.. other wise the person gets to slug/bruise you back.

Hold breath on bridges/tunnels... never heard of cemetaries tho'

Wow... I haven't heard of a lot of these, and I come from a long line of superstitious people. I have heard of the holding your breath when passing a cemetary, but we never did this, especially since my parents used to take us to visit historical cemetaries fairly frequently.

Here are some things we do:

If you look at the clock and all the numbers are the same (ie 1:11, 2:22, 3:33, etc) make a wish.

If you and another person say the same phrase at the same time, touch thumbs and touch something blue. It is supposed to be good luck.

I know there are others, but most in my family involve sports...like I can't wear any player's jersey because he will definitely be traded, injured or retired; I don't wear team jerseys on game day, just team colors; oh, and the strangest thing is that during football playoffs, I put Tom Brady in my refrigerator. Well, a picture of him anyway. He needs to stay cool.

Who was calling for the loony bin?

Never read a Trixie Belden book!

Which "thing" are you referring too!

But straight jackets come in so many pretty colors now-a-days...

Maybe that's why I have very little luck. I've never even heard of this, let alone done it.

One thing I almost always do is send up a little prayer for God to take care of those that may be in trouble whenever I hear sirens.
