This article was posted to the Orange County Register www.ocregister.com today. I usually like it when Disney is willing to take chances with attractions which are past their prime. But this makes no sense to me! I hope Disney reconsiders...
Tom Sawyer Island Awakens: Star Wars Land Will Include Changes to Iconic Island
Burbank, California – Disney pulled out the big guns today as George Lucas, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill attended their latest announcement about the unprecedented Star Wars Land expansion to their Disney parks. Also on hand was newcomer Lupita Nyong'o. At a press conference held earlier today at Walt Disney Company headquarters in Burbank, CA, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that as part of the reworking of the Rivers of America at Disneyland to accommodate the Star Wars Land expansion, that Tom Sawyer Island will be converted to Maz Kanata’s castle. Maz Kanata is a new character in the blockbuster movie “The Force Awakens”, the recently released addition to the Star Wars franchise. Lupita Nyong'o was the voice of Maz Kanata in the movie.
“Tom Sawyer Island has held the imagination of young Disney fans for generations”, Iger began. “It was one of Disneyland’s original attractions and overseen personally by Walt Disney. But Walt himself said that Disneyland would never be finished”, Iger continued. “Ten years ago we transformed Tom Sawyer Island to a Pirates Lair after the success of our Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. Now we will capture the imagination of today’s young Disney fans again by transforming the island to Maz Kanata’s Castle”.
Iger explained how several times a day Stormtroopers will attack Maz Kanata’s castle much like what happened in the The Force Awakens movie. Guests on the island at the time will find themselves engulfed in a galactic battle.
The old Mike Fink Keel Boats which have been used for 60 years as a way to access the island will give way to several new tunnels that will take guests from the heart of Star Wars Land under the river and onto the Island. The tunnels will have X-Wing fighters to carry guests to the island. The transportation system will employ electromagnetic levitation to give the appearance of X-Wing fighters and their guests flying through the tunnels – albeit at a much lower speed than those from the movie.
Every morning a replica of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber will be hidden somewhere in the island's castle (similar to what happened in the movie) and the lucky guest who finds it will be featured in a battle with Kylo Ren that happens at dusk each day – much like what takes place at the popular Jedi Training Academy. Further, the lucky guest will receive a lifetime pass to all Disney parks in the world.
Disney fan websites exploded after the announcement. Respected blogger Anakinsky Walker was in favor of the island conversion project and had this to say to all Disney fans: "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
