Stormalong Bay Pool refurb

I just received a letter via snail mail - that portions of Stormalong bay will be closed (due to refurb) during my stay.

We are headed down in January - and pool time would be limited (due to weather) anyways.

Is this a big deal?

I ask because we are doing a split stay SSR and BCV, I was hoping the SSR portion of our stay would be switched to BCV (I am on the wait list) if availability opens up.

DO you think people might switch their resorts because of the refurb?

I was going to post the update - just got my letter too (staying MLK weekend).

We're not that upset by it because we're on a short trip and know it might be too cold for swimming anyway. The lettersays parts of SAB will be open, but the slide will be shut down.

I am really upset- I booked at 7 months out- I specifically asked if there was any BC pool work scheduled because I needed a 2 bedroom during Presidents week 2//24-2/21(and yes it will be warm enough for us to swim) I have 4 boys coming that are 17-18 years old(it is the 18 yo birthday ad a graduation trip) and they really were looking forward to the lazy river- yep closed during our stay.
Cant move because there is no availability anywhere, could have done BWV and had a 2brm std view for the same amenities I will now have...PITA....waste of points.
Tried to talk to DVC today- yea- down. DVC has become a joke. I stayed at the BCV the last time there was a pool renovation (we got no notice) and I tried to not get up set when we got there and saw the sign...tried to make the best of it- it was horrible-specifically asked so I would not go through it again. This is awful-anyone have any suggestions?

That is what they usually tell us to do- and then like I said- why I am paying premium points to stay a BCV when I could have stayed at BVW(home resort) and gotten STV view for 50 points less... They should refund member points and take away the "premium" for BCV if the feature pool is unavailable for your stay IMO

Honestly, DVC works for people who are willing to put up with lack of flexibility - including having to book something early and then discovering that the reason you booked is not going to be there and your options for moving your trip or picking a different resort are limited - in exchange for getting a good room at a good price. There isn't flexibility to refund points - because we, the other members - own the points - and the resorts are sold so we can use them and pretty much at capacity - to give everyone points back means more points than rooms in the system. The contract spells out DVC's responsibilities here, and what you are entitled to - and its a room - not a pool or access to a pool. Disney is very clear - at VAKL and AKL animals may not be on the savannah, at BLT and the other monorail resorts, there may be no monorail, and there may be no SAB at BCV. (And as SSR owners discovered, fireworks were not a long term promise - nor the Adventurer's Club). If this is not the trade you wanted - a less expensive way to stay at these resorts, giving up flexibility - then its a poor deal for you.

It's the nature of the beast visiting during downtimes. MS will not have the info far enough ahead. IMO it's not worth getting worked up over and is part of the compromises of a timeshare but I do understand the position. For anywhere where they can't handle the issue, not owning might be best but it's really a Disney issue, not just a DVC one, so either going other times or being prepared to change plans would seem to be prudent.

So at least you should have the slide.

It isn't just a DVC one, but because of higher occupancy rates, more strict cancellation policy and points expiring, its more burdensome when staying on points than if you were booking BC on cash. Then again, what is the rack rate on a Beach Club room nowadays?

If a significant portion of it is closed, you can try to get a pass to the one water park that is open.

I understand your disappointment. You will still enjoy the trip!

Pools are one area that gets the attention that they need.

Disney refurbs the pools every couple of years, slides seem to always need attention. Chemicals, the sun, heavy use causes the slide surface to wear and someone could get injured or get splinters if the surface isn't maintained.

Unfortunately op, this is more of a long term solution and won't help your immediate problem

but that is not a bad option. we are selling our dvc membership the end of this summer.
While it was great while it lasted, changes in Disney, slides in quality and other issues overall have just made owning a dvc no longer worthwhile for us.

we'll still get our occasional Disney fix but we'll just do it the normal way. selling isn't always a bad option. almost 15 years of ownership and to many trips to count we've definitely gotten our monies worth.

I am the OP and was just looking to see if you all thought some people might switch resorts because of the pool closure.

Sounds like a few of you are mad about it...

It doesn't bother me that it's closed, we stay that BCV for the proximity to Epcot and HS...not the pool.

If I'm honest, its not my favorite pool. I have 3 young kids and it is terribly difficult to keep an eye on all of them at SAB.

I prefer the creepy clown across the way!!!

We have stayed at BCV and I am always surprised that part of SAB is called a lazy river. That moving water just doesn't equal a lazy river in my book. :dunno:
