Please, please, please go to Snopes.com to verify what verify what everyone is reading in their e-mails and on this board. Everyone is up in a panic about all of these stores that are "closing". Honestly people, most of this is a huge exaggeration! Sure, some stores are closing. The economy is pretty bad at this time, but the media wants us to believe that it is in a lot worse shape than it actually is. Stores close all the time. Circuit City has been closing stores for a long time now. (Ours went out of business a few years ago). Our JC Penney closed three years ago. This e-mail fails to mention all the new stores that have opened. I have had this list e-mailed to me at least 10 times in the past two weeks. Before you forward anything like this on, or put it on a message board, go to Snopes to find out the complete truth first. It is so easy to do and I have saved myself a lot of embarrassment by doing this. Well, I will get off of my high horse now. I just want to spread the word about Snopes.

I agree, someone was posting it on these boards mentioning JcPenneys is closing, but I haven't seen any accurate reports stating they were, however I've even seen atleast two in this area open.

Agreed - I have suggested similar on those threads. The Chicken Little effect only makes things worse, as it deters customers from shopping at chains which were not in financial danger. This in turn means that they will lose significant revenue, thereby fulfilling a prophecy.

Some people are just passing along an email, but consider where that rumour started. It has a very negative impact on the economy, and only serves to further alarm people already upset and afraid.

Spreading rumours and gossip serves no positive purpose, and is actually dangerous. I have seen similar rumours on many boards on this website lately and it is really disappointing.

I was at the mall today and our Libby Lu is closing. They were having a 50% off everything in the store. The sales girl told me they were planning to close in Jan. but said she thinks it will be sooner as they have no more stock left to put on the floor after what is out now sells.

I agree, do not panic when an email circulates that a store is closing. Many locations were built 20-30 years ago in a certain area of town that has died off and they just relocate to the booming strip center at the other end of town. If a retailer is in trouble, it will be well known on the news.

Retailers closing unprofitable locations actually helps them to stay in business in the long run as the drag is removed from the bottom line.

I recently received an e-mail for Eddue Bauer saying there were emails circulating that they are closing and that they have been around for years and are doing fine, etc. It was a long email.

Then I see on the AOL news box (you know when you first sign on and you can see all the major headlines, etc.) - there is a list of 10 stores that might not make it next year and Eddie Bauer is on the list - might not make it. (it included stores like Chicos, Talbots, Dillards, etc.).

Snopes isn't a very reilabe source either
But can you suggest one better? What are they not reliable on? what are you basing this on? I am curious.

I agree with the Chicken Little effect - don't pass on rumors! ugh! I am in charge of the scrip program for our school. I have had a TON of those damned emails telling people not to buy gift cards. duh - use your common sense - don't pass things on without reading or checking, the economy will do better if people just use their heads & think about what they are buying & where they are buying it.
