We are new to DVC and are taking our first trip as members this April. We will have points left over after our stay at Bay Lake Tower and we are wondering if anyone has ever used their points to stop overnight at HHI on their way to or from WDW. It looks to be only a half hour off of 95, and we want to check it out for the future anyway because we have heard good things. It just seems to make more sense for us to drive from PA to HHI (and use our points), then drive HHI to WDW the next day, than to stop at some seedy I-95 hotel. I will greatly appreciate any insight anyone has on this...

I-95 hotels are not always seedy. Some are very nice. We usually stay at the Super 8 in Savannah. It is brand new, clean and offers free breakfast. It is not at all seedy. If you do some research you should be able to find some very nice stopover hotels and get a great deal as well.

As for HH, that 30 minute drive is with no traffic. There is never no traffic on HH. :) A more realistic estimate is 45 minutes to an hour. For us it wouldn't be worth it. The HH resort is a destination, rather than a stop over, and much of its charm lies in all you can do there. Getting there late on a travel day and then leaving the next morning wouldn't give you enough time to make it worth it, IMO. I would save it for a time when you can spend no less than two nights there.

Thanks for the advice! I definitely agree that all I-95 hotels are not seedy and I'm sure we could find a decent one, hopefully without spending tons of money. I guess we are just a little anxious to check out some of the DVC resorts we have never seen before. I'm sure you are right that we would miss out on a lot of the activities and features that HHI has to offer. Maybe we will just bank the remaining points for our next trip. Thanks for the info, that was exactly what I was looking to learn about.

Edit: I just checked out that Super 8 and it does look very nice and is very reasonably priced! I expected that we wouldn't be able to find anything decent for under $100 so that's a good find. Thank you!

As note, there are a LOT of good hotels along the interstates, If you use ratings to evaluate, it's difficult to end up with a seedy option. I personally would not drive two hours total out of the day just to stay at a DVC resort for the night. OTOH, if you have a day or 2 to spend and enjoy, I would seriously consider it.

You are right, and I think we are gonna skip HHI until we have more time to spend there because I have heard such great things about it. I guess I didn't mean all the hotels are seedy, just that I didn't know if I could get a good one at a low price. And I'm glad I asked, because I didn't realize how long it would take to get from I-95 to HHI, as I've never been to that part of South Carolina before. Thanks for the help!

We've stopped at Disney's HHI Resort on our way to and from WDW. I agree that it takes about an hour from I95. We don't mind staying there for just a night especially if we have extra points to use.

We have found some nice (and some not so nice) hotels along I95. W usually stay at a Hampton Inn in Richmond Hill or Darien, GA going south. On the way home we usually stay at a new Hampton Inn in Florence. SC.

I figure that we will be stopping at HHI for 2 nights in December on our way to WDW.

This year we stayed at a Hampton Inn, going and coming, while nice, I think mixing the trip with some Disney magic will make it a bit better.
