(I thought this might be a good Dis topic...)

Aside from taking them down and verbally telling people, "Please don't use the decorative towels," how do you keep people from not using your decorative towels to dry their hands?

I always leave a hand towel right next to the sink, but people still always use my decorative towels! They get all matted down when people use them!

And...

What about this...

... And the presence of this...

... Makes people think, "Gosh, I am SURE I should use the former!"

:confused3

Aren't the decorative towels washable?
(they do look nice, btw :))

I think by the way you have them tied like that, it's pretty obvious they aren't meant to be used. Do most people actually use them rather than the one laying practically on top of the sink? If so, that's actually pretty funny!!

Oh my gosh, I guess I'm guilty! :flower3: It would never occur to me that the towels that are hanging in a guest bath are not to be touched! I have guest towels too but after we have guests I just toss them in the washer. :confused3 And I wouldn't use a towel sitting on the side of the sink, especially if it was damp from other users....as a "guest" I'd use a dry corner of the "guest towel".

Those were just examples,, but mine are equally as obviously "decorative". Yes, they are washable, but once you wash them, they fade and change shapes. I try and wash them not too often, as they can't be bought anymore and I love them!

Exactly. I'm not going to use the wadded up damp towel sitting on the sink. That's kind of gross.

I think my guests are worthy of using my "pretty" towels.

If you really want to preserve them as something to look at, either move them to your bathroom or put up something better for your guests.

Sorry, I thought those were photos of your actual towels :confused3

I guess I am in the minority!

The thing is, people will use the damp hanging towels instead of the clean and folded hand towel near the sink! :confused3 I've even before left two or three folded hand towels near the sink... like at a hotel.

Maybe it is just my guests... maybe I am just crazy! Maybe I should hang the hand towel OVER my decorative towels! :rotfl:

I'd assume the brown towel was a cleaing towel you forgot about and use the guest towels as well.

I would assume the pretty towels are put out for the guests to use. I keep mine put away until I have company. I keep "regular" towels in the holder otherwise.

Well, the guest towels looked nice and fluffy and CLEAN. I wouldn't use a hand towel lying by the sink, especially folded up. I'd think they were folded up for some special reason. :confused3

More importantly, what exactly am I supposed to do once I've unfolded the towel and used it? Am I supposed to refold it for the next person? NOT. Do I just leave it in a used up wad next to the sink. I think not.

Ah, a hanging towel. Easy. I wipe my hands off, refluff it so it's even on the rod and I'm good to go with very little evidence I've been there or created a mess.

::yes::

OP, you can get nice towels really cheap during Kohl's 30% off sales. They have nice, bright colorful ones there now. So even when they fade, they are still nice and bright. They are also thick & fluffy and pretty inexpensive to replace. :thumbsup2

When we have guests, we put out a basket of folded paper towels on the counter by the sink. They work well, everyone knows what they are for and everyone gets a fresh, clean towel.

My MIL did that for a party a few years ago and got many positive comments from her guests.

:thumbsup2 OMG, why didn't I think of this!!! :rotfl: Perfect solution!

My aunt did something similar. She realized she had a ton of decorative "fingertip" towels, so she just put a big basket of them out with an empty basket for the used ones.

She eventually collected enough to cover the holidays and it was really cute to see the variety of seasonal towels.

Could you put up a little towel bar or ring by the sink? I would guess the objection for most people has to do with the towel not being hung up.

It's a towel (no matter how fancy it is).

It's in a bathroom.

People normally wash their hands in a bathroom; and dry them after.

And if you have a (only one?!?) towel out, that will be damp and gross after a few people go through your bathroom, some people will use whatever else is in the room, even if it's hogtied like that, BECAUSE IT'S CLEAN AND DRY, AND THE DIRTY & GROSS ONE ISN'T.

If you don't want your pretty towels "matted down", then put them away when you have people at your house, and put out the paper ones that SueM suggested. The Four Seasons here in Las Vegas uses paper hand towels in the ladies' room in their lobby, and that's a Five Star hotel. You should see the wastebasket they put out for them . . .

If I put a towel in the bathroom, it's meant to be used, regardless of how pretty it is. And if I were at a dinner party, I wouldn't use a wadded up damp towel on the counter (Ick!) when there was a nice dry towel hanging right there.

Sorry, but towels are towels to me; I learned my lesson (see below). I would have used them.

We don't have "decorator" things in our house anymore. We have Amish made quilts on our beds and we use them. I once told the Amish woman that we bought them from that we folded them up at night and placed them on a chair. She was devastated because they are supposed to be used "to keep you warm" -- so we started using them.

A friend of mine inherited her Mom's diamond ring and had it appraised. She was shocked, but she still wears it. What good would it do to leave it in a drawer someplace? Now she appreciates it and sees it every single day and thinks about her Mom.
