Stop Spoiling Olympic Results!

At this point, what would be the point if that? The specific event is over and I am assuming people know who won. I cannot bwliwvw that everyone who hasn't watched it yet is walking around with earplugs in and blinders on so they don't accidentally hear/see it somewhere else?

So, if you were listening to the radio on the home from work and they mentioned who won would you call them and throw a fit? Or if you 'accidentally' saw it in the paper first or you didn't get the channel switched before the news announced it would you be complaining "How dare you" to them?

Guess I just don't get this. I understand being disappointed, but some people have been downright UPSET, offended, pouty, rude, you name it over this. I guess for me there are far more important things to be upset about in life and like I said, I understand being disappointed, but being outright rude to the OP over this and expecting an apology or expecting her to somehow fix things is a little over the top imo.

OK, fine. She SHOULD apologize, grovel for forgiveness, and get 40 lashes with a wet noodle . . .

Then just don't read the threads. I don't see what the problem is. It is your choice whether or not you read things. Don't tell others not to post because your don't have the selfcontrol not to read it.
:thumbsup2 Seems like a simple solution rather that issuing all sorts of undocumented requirements for people to follow. If people truly want the whole "Spoiler" in the title made a rule, contact the mods/WMs and ask that it be made a real rule. Otherwise, just get used to the fact that you may occasionally stumble across information you'd rather not see.

All this fuss over the Olympics. :confused3 The ratings sure don't indicate that there's this much interest or concern.

ITA! These threads leave the impression this was a tragedy along the lines of Abu Ghraib.

Make matters worse the poster spoiled and then disappeared so it still sits there. What's the point in doing that?

Just pure mean vindictiveness I guess? I mean, come on - it was an honest mistake! Why does everyone act like she was out to ruin your lives????? And if this was all it took - I am so sorry for you! There are bigger things out there - really!!

Things like this have happened since the DIS has been around and they will continue to happen, there is not a thing any of us can do about it. Four years from now people will be posting these same sorts of threads. There will always be new people to the boards who don't know how "we're supposed to act". They won't know the preceived "protocol".

I can understand being upset by it, but asking for apologies for an innocent mistake is going way too far. If you really don't want to see any spoilers, don't open up a paper, don't turn on the television and God forbid, don't even THINK about going on the Internet, let alone the DIS, because there are bound to be spoilers everywhere. I think we all need to cut people a break and realize that people who are new to a community or who haven't been through the Olympics or World Series or other major attractions, movies etc may just be human and MAY just make a mistake.

Yeah, it would be nice if we all knew what everyone on the DIS expected us at all times, but until you've been around a community a while and have "been through it all before", you may just have to make a few mistakes. I know I make enough of them.

Wow. So many people who are completely OK with the idea of spoiling the fun/anticipation for everyone else, when the power to NOT do so is completely within their ability and QUITE simple to do so. JUST DON'T PUT THE RESULTS IN THE TITLE. You can post whatever you like in the body of the thread!

Come on. Some of you guys are being difficult and argumentative JUST to be difficult and argumentative and I am really sick of it. Do you enjoy raining on other people's parades? Were you that kid who went around popping other kid's balloons at birthday parties? Are you that guy at the movie theatre who has read the book version of the film and shouts out the ending of the film and ruins it for those around you just because you can? We have the power to be courteous to our fellow DIS'ers, so let's please show it and simply not ruin the outcome of these events by putting the results in the titles.

BTW, I am please to see that goofsk8 did change the thread title. Sure the event is over, but the change may prevent new posters from thinking that that was an approriate thread title. Well done goofysk8!

It's so funny to come across threads like these. I agree that people need to lighten up a bit and realize that this is a public discussion board. Not everyone spends everyday here or knows the "community" etiquette as well as they do. Give them a break! It would be nice to think that people on a "community" board, especially those asking for other posters to be "courteous", would be gracious enough themselves to accept a mistake here or there.

From where I am sitting you are the one going over the edge.

The simple fact is that this Olympics subject is very unique. I have no idea why NBC thinks their daily primetime braodcast is a good idea, or why people are buying into it, but given modern communications it makes no sense.

I'll ask again, does anybody think word wouldn't get out about the American "Miracle" hockey win back in 1980?

Now while all the event results do not compare, the world has changed and far more people are getting the results live than are watching for the "Hollywoodized" crap NBC is pushing.

To expect anybody to pretend otherwise is out of line. It's happening live, no need for spoilers IMO. It's like saying somebody can't report the news because you want to wait till 6:00pm your time so you can watch it on NBC news.

I agree with the posters that say it is no big deal. Relax! If you truly, truly are so against being "spoiled" than seriously, do not go onto the internet on to a community discussion type of board. I am not trying to be obnoxious but really it is just true. The Olympics are news when they happen, and sometimes people may be excited to discuss things when they happen and not have to wait until every last person on the planet has gotten around to watching it on their TIVO.

I'm sure everyone that posts a thread about the Olympics (that IS allowed, right?) will keep your words in mind. I am quite certain no one is trying to drive you nuts.

I agree that many posters were unduly harsh toward goofysk8. Perhaps if she made an apology, it would help?

I know she made a mistake and I don't need an apology. I am just hoping that this thread would raise awareness for future thread posters to avoid such problems and keep a harmonious board.

I felt like you were one of the harshest, yet you put it off on others.

Not really. Some people don't see the need to go off the deep end over something as trivial as this. You'd think the world had come to an end the way some people are acting. It's just the Olympics for pity's sake. If you don't want to know anything, stay off the Internet, because the results are posted all over the place. Don't watch TV; don't listen to the radio -- because the results are announced as news.
BTW, I am please to see that goofsk8 did change the thread title. Sure the event is over, but the change may prevent new posters from thinking that that was an approriate thread title. Well done goofysk8!
It is always nice when others do your bidding. Next target: MSNBC.com??? :rotfl2:

I can see being a bit bummed...but hysterical is beyond me. Being mean because your surprise was ruined...is beyond me. Screaming to get your point acrosss...well you get it.

Good grief.

I know! I was so mad that someone spoiled the Ice dancing tonight. I was sitting watching with my DD and during the commercial I came to the CB just to check something and BOOM I was spoiled right in the title. Make matters worse the poster spoiled and then disappeared so it still sits there. What's the point in doing that? :rolleyes

You really have nothing better to do than bash people? I DID NOT disappear. I had other things to do!! Not that I need to explain myself to you or anybody else on this board. Unlike you, I do not live my life on here!

Some of you need to take your own advice. You "pooped" all over the enthusiasm of a young skater who was enjoying the thrill of someone from the USA winning a medal in a sport she loves. Talk about a party pooper! A friendly PM would have worked as well, if not better, than a bit of community shame. :crazy2:

Anyone can post anything they like, anywhere ... in the title or in the thread ... as long as it doesn't break the REAL DIS rules. :sunny:

I'm sure people aren't intentionally posting spoilers JUST to ruin it for others.

Don't sweat it. No real rules were broken and no permanent (or even temporary) damage was done. Some people got their knickers in a knot over something trivial. You are certainly not responsible for their reactions. Let it be like water off a duck's back.

FYI, Jennasis...maybe you should go back and re-read ALL of your posts regarding MY thread. It appears to me that you were one of the biggest instigators of all. Just to let you know that I am watching the ladies short programs right now and I know the leaderboard. Don't worry, I don't want to disappoint you; therefore, I won't post the results so far!! :stir:
