Stop-Motion Camera help

My DS is soon turning 13 and is very interested in making stop motion videos of his legos and star wars action figures. I have no clue what he needs to be able to do this. He said our digital camera isn't good enough What type digital camera do you need? I am also assuming you need some kind of software to put it all together but I have no clue what. I would appreciate any help at all since I'd love for him to have a hobby other than playing Wii.

the key is to make sure the camera does not move. so a tripod and a remote trigger are best.
