Good morning Dis friends!
This weekend's diamond dash was a complete waste of our time. When I received the first email from the convention and visitor's center, it said you had to write an essay about why you deserve the chance to participate. It also said that there would be a limited number of participants.
We left Friday when I got off work and didn't make it in town early enough to go by the diamond store and pick up our "extra special clue". We checked into the hotel (more about that later) and went in search of the convention center. We wanted to make sure we knew where it was and where the meeting place was. It was pretty close to downtown so it was fairly easy to find.
The next morning, I get a text message that says to pump our bicycle tires, get out our unicycle, oil our skateboard or rollerblade wheels and get ready to compete. It also gave other details which was absolutely nothing like it was described in the emails I had received.
We would have to go all around the town and try to earn points. You could skip the question but you lose the sequence of your clues and you also lost points. You also had to be the fastest to score the point. John and I looked at each other as I read off the text message and just said "we're never going to win this thing". But, we were willing to give it a try.
We drive over to the convention center and see a sea of red shirts. Lots and lots and lots of red shirts. We drove down the street a little further in search of a parking place and see people lined up for at least two blocks. And, they were all on wheels....bicycles, skateboards, scooters and skates. We looked at each other again and said....."there's no way we can keep up with all these people". We were going to be on foot!
We pulled over in a parking lot way down the block to decide what to do. We talked about getting in line and at least getting our t-shirts but then we'd have to stand there forever just to get our shirt. The line wasn't moving at all. While we talked, we could see people walking away with red shirts slung over their shoulders and getting in their cars and leaving. We figured they were on foot too and decided to not even try. That's when we decided we weren't even going to try either.
We started up the car and drove to the nearest Applebee's to have lunch. From there, we drove up to Lake Ouachita State Park and had a look around. About 3 hours had passed since the diamond dash was supposed to have started so we figured it would be safe to go back downtown.
We saw a lot of people walking around in red shirts carrying little bags which we assume were the gift bags. There were kids that looked like they were no more than 15 or 16 years old. We were told that it was supposed to promote tourism for the young in Hot Springs but it also had an age group you had to be in and it wasn't 15 or 16!
I gotta tell you, we were extremely disappointed in the whole thing. Had I known it was going to be like this, I would have saved the $350.00 it cost us to stay (hotel, food, gas, etc.) in Hot Springs. I bet the hotels were laughing all the way to the bank at us suckers who showed up not knowing what was truly going on.
I came to the office today and looked up how many people showed up for the diamond dash....over 700! What happened to a limited number of participants? I bet you those 700 people didn't all write essays!
Anyway, I'll write a little mini-trip report for you guys in a bit. Gotta get the boss settled in and print out some stuff for a client who will be here any minute. Just wanted to let ya'll know we are back from a sucker weekend.
