It has been said by some people that Disneyland can be a magical place where you leave the world of today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy, where birds sing words and the flowers croon, where you can experience such wonders as the Backside of Water, and where everyone lives happily ever after. Some may even say that Disneyland is a place where romance can blossom. Well, at least that's the theory anyway. I guess the whole romance thing is supposed to work better if you stick to one person at a time.
Apparently I still haven't figured that part out yet, as this past weekend, I found myself accompanying no fewer than three ladies (all of them single, and all of them theoretically eligible mates) on a trip to the Disneyland Resort and other nearby attractions. And no, before you ask, it wasn't THAT kind of trip. For the time being at least, all three of the friends I went with are pretty firmly in the "Just Friends" category. I've known these three ladies for several years now, but aside from a couple of highly informal dates, I've never been involved in any sort of relationship with any of them. In spite of this, I'd still consider us all to be good friends, but nothing beyond that at this point. In a way this works out, because there's no expectations to worry about. Aside from a day trip up to Vancouver last year, this was be the first time that I've traveled with any of them. On one hand, I know of quite a few guys who wouldn't mind being followed around by that many ladies at once, but on the other hand, it's my understanding that these things are ultimately supposed to be limit one to a customer. In other words, the whole thing is just a bit complicated.
For my part, I'm a thirtysomething single guy (never married, and never in a serious relationship either for that matter) and a bit of a Disney junkie, as a number of previous park visits can attest to. Most of my Disney trips have been solo, and I travel solo on a fairly regular basis. Lately I've also taken up a bit of a cruising habit, something I'm pretty sure I inherited from my parents (more on this later.) In order to protect the innocent, I will refer to the three ladies I was with by their initials, C, M and J. C and M are sisters in roughly the same age range (with M being the slightly older one.) M seems to be slightly more reserved than her sister C, but when the two of them get together they like to joke around a bit and have fun. J is a bit younger than the rest of us, and rents a room in M's house. Between the four of us on this trip, she would probably end up with the role of "Straight man" (or woman in this case) in the group, being the quiet one while everyone else is joking around, but she'll also join in every once in a while too.
In lieu of a hotel, we had the use of a condo (more of a townhouse actually) in Laguna Hills that belongs to C and M's parents. This saved us the expense of paying for a hotel, but somehow I found plenty of other things to spend the money on, not the least of which was an Annual Pass. Through a bit of an unusual set of circumstances, I actually found myself in the position of going down to the Los Angeles area twice in once month, and as a result of this (not to mention the likelihood of a Summer 2012 trip after the DCA upgrades are finished) I decided to take the plunge on an Annual Pass for the first time. What happened here was that originally, the plan was for our group to take this trip later in the month. Back when we were planning this (around April or so,) I found out that there was a repositioning cruise on the Sapphire Princess from Vancouver to LA that would coincide with the planned trip, and since I was looking for an excuse to use up some vacation time, so I booked that. It was shortly after I booked the cruise that the rest of the group determined that Labor Day Weekend was really the only practical time to get the time off to go to Disneyland, but since I was planning the cruise already anyway, I figured I might as well go with the group, and then when I was back down in LA for a couple of days after the cruise I would still have the option of doing Disneyland in the evenings (this would be an opportunity to catch Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy) but probably won't make it my primary focus on that trip.
Anyway, I don't think I'm going to do a comprehensive blow-by-blow trip report of this one (I've done those before, not sure I have the attention span for it) but I'll try to provide at least a reasonable summary of the trip in the coming days. It was a lot of fun, and having good company certainly helped.
