Stone Mountain, Georgia

My dh, myself, and our two little ones (ages 7 & 5) are taking a two - three week camping trip in June. I visited Stone Mountain, Georgia when I was a kid and thought it might be fun to take the kids there. I would like some thoughts on camping at Stone Mountain and some advice about things to do while there. We saw the adventure park that is nearby, but from what I read, it sounds like that is a days visit - at best. Thanks for any help!!

We went there for the lazer light shows a few years ago, but didn't camp. Stone Mountain is something to see, for sure!

I was just there last weekend camping. Our first experience. Tell me the size of your "rig" and I can help you with what would be the best sites to choose. We live in the area and have an annual pass to Stn Mtn (just bought these). Something negative about the campground is that getting level on a lot of the sites is almost impossible. In my opinion the campground needs a facelife real bad. There are a lot of potholes around the loops and some sites have gravel, some have very old asphalt, some are dirt. A lot of hills makes it hard for the kiddies to ride bikes if they are little. My six yr old had troubles. Heck I had troubles. hehe But there is a road, not real busy that a lot of people go ride on. I am not trying to say don't go, I just want you to be informed. Also what time of the year are you going? Right now there is "Snow Mtn" going on. You can tube down the area where you sit for the laser show on fake snow. It is kinda cool. But the rest of the park is shut down for renovations. It is like they are only focusing on Snow Mtn right now. The Barn, Sky Climb and 4D movie etc was shut down. They said they would open again in the spring. I love love the laser show and the experience that it gives a family. Maybe it was the time of the year that turned me off. Since we purchased the annual pass, we will definately give it another try. But like I said a facelift to the sites is really needed. The darn squirrels ate a hole in our new Toule hanging trash bag thinyg that hangs on the side of our HTT. The squirrels are "possessed", they didn't touch my dogs bowl of dog food but tore things up trying to get to the trash. Drove my DH crazy. I will post more if I think of anything else.

I posted before I went and looked at these reviews, I guess I was right on. Think twice. I would suggest maybe finding a beautiful State Park, like Fort Yargo, only about 40 min drive to Stn Mtn and stay there and visit Stone Mtn for a day. This would be what I would do. I live only minutes from Fort Yargo State Park and we love love to stay there. It is nice. All of the State Parks in GA are good. Stone Mountain Park is wonderful, I just wasn't impressed by the campground. Take Care.

I would recommend Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Burton. It is as close to heaven as you can get! It is my favorite place to camp. The ONLY drawback is that it doesn't have sewer hook-up but the bath houses are really nice. Also, they have great lake fishing either on the many docks or you can rent boats at the campground or at a nearby marina. The trout fishing is pretty good too! Lake Burton is the most beautiful lake in the world but there is no beach for swimming. It would be about 100 miles north of Stone Mtn though so I don't know if that would be of interest to you.

I have never camped at Stone Mtn. so I have no opinion on that but it doesn't sound good. We love the Laser Show but could do without the rest.

Are you specifically wanting to camp in the Atlanta area for a reason or just Stone Mountain Park?

We are not 100% sure of our plans - go figure. In fact, we just decide about two weeks ago that we were going to do this. So far, we are going to the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky to check out a nearby lake for a day or two, then to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for about five or six days. After Gatlinburg we plan to head to Stone Mountain, then the east coast in South Carolina, to Raleigh to visit family, and then back home to Ohio. We obviously have lots to do... I am accepting tips and advice!

And getting a ressie there is like getting one at the fort during x-mas...I agree flame I love that state park,along with vogel and a few others up that way.

Vogel is my absolute favorite. It is right up there with the Fort!! I love the beach and the natural springs in the lake. The swimming is heaven!

We are regular campers at Stone Mountain and I say June will be a perfect time to camp there. They open all the attractions up over Memorial Day Weekend. Your kids will love it! If you're camping you will be able to get a two-day attractions admission for the price of one day. Definitely pay the extra amount to "Ride the Duck." If you're lucky, your driver will be "Donald" he is excellent and he calls himself "Donald the Duck Driver." He also lets the kids drive the duck. Also, don't miss the Laser Show and the 4-D Theater.
