I never got my high school class ring, and my college one has no stone.
But when I was looking at them in high school, I was going to go with my birthstone.

But I like her idea of picking the color that she likes. :thumbsup2

If it makes you feel any better (and I'm really not sure why this is such an issue in the first place), emerald and aquamarine are very closely related. They're both from the beryl family.

It certainly isn't an issue here...not sure where you got that impression. It was simply a question with a poll.

My stone was purple. I liked purple and loved the way it looked w/ what they called "rainbow" in it.

My birthstone is ruby, which I like o.k., but I just liked the purple better.

Personally, I don't know anyone who just picked a random color for their class ring stone but she really doesn't like her birthstone (Emerald) or her school color (Red/Ruby). She has her heart set on the Aquamarine stone which is just a little odd to me as it has no reasoning behind it, LOL.

Actually, I did!! Sounds like your DD and me are similar. I LOVE the Aquamarine stone. I just love the color of it. My birthstone is an Emerald. My School colors were Red/Gold (so Ruby there for stone).

I ended up with a Rainbow Aquamarine stone. I forgot the specific name (that was a long time ago) but it's Aquamarine so is a light blue however it changes the hue depending on how the light hits it & can look rainbowish. I love the different colors of the rainbow and just loved the way this stone looked at the time.

I had no specific reason for getting it other than I liked it.

My parents just let us pick out whatever ring we wanted. I really don't remember any discussion whatsoever with my parents on what color stone I wanted & why.

Until this thread I didn't know people considered the stone based on school colors and/or their birthstone. I just thought people picked out whatever stone color they liked for it.

Back in the "olden days" of the early 1960's, there were few choices when picking out a class ring.

Ours were black onyx with the school towers in gold on top. Very nice look, the gold on top of black.. The girls rings weren't as bold as the boys yet not what you'd call dainty either.

My ring has since been melted down with other gold into a free form nugget pendant. I didn't wear the ring much which is why I let it go. Now though, I wonder if I should have kept it as a keepsake?

I picked a blue stone for mine.

Our school color was Maroon and my birthstone is a Garnet so I could have killed 2 births with 1 stone (pun intended :thumbsup2 ). But I liked the blue and my mom didn't care what color I got since it was my ring.

My son that just graduated picked his own stone as well. He went with the school color maroon and got a ruby stone.

Mine's my birthstone. I wore it twice. I didn't want to buy one and my mom made me. She thought I'd regret it. I had to buy it with my own $$ and just didn't want one. I still have it and it is also DD's birthstone (amethyst) but she does not like it.

My class ring was very unusual. I chose a blue stone--artificial sapphire. The ring itself was a more girly version of what the boys got, but not delicate enough to be TOO girly. The circle bit around the stone is yellow gold and the shank is a silver color. I don't remember now if it's ACTUALLY silver or if it's something silver-like.

I wanted to get a clear stone, so I could have a Confederate flag underneath the stone but my grandmother said absolutely not. At the time, I was fairly miffed. Our school mascot had been the Confederate Rebel and we flew the Confederate Flag at most of our football games. Our marching band had them on their uniforms, as did the cheerleaders and the majorette dancers (there's a name for them but I can't remember what it is...drill team?). My soph. year the school board decided it was too un-PC to have the flag flown at sporting events, on the uniforms and on our class rings. My senior class was the last one to be allowed to have the option of a Confederate rebel on the ring itself (it's on one side, with the class shield on the other) and the flag as an inset under the stone.

Sapphire (school color) and on the sides diamonds (because I wanted them). I never wear it, (I didn’t even wear it a year after I received it) and I would be hard pressed to even know where to find it in my house.:confused3

With that said I would tell her to get what she likes and wants, then there might be a better chance of it even being worn later.

I had an onyx...I was one of those gloomy teens who wanted a black stone  I loved it though.

I say 'had' because it disappeared in my apartment a couple years ago and I never found it before I moved out so I guess it's long gone now

(ETA this is my HS ring...I never got a college one)

I skipped on class rings in HS and college, although I kinds regret not getting one from college.

my school color was red, my birthstone was diamond, I chose saphire because I loved blue

Well first, I'll state that they were the biggest wastes of money ever, but I got caught up in NEEDING these things that mean very very little to the universe.

High school ring, fake rose quartz, since opal is my birthstone but it's not sturdy enough to be in a class ring (and hard to make fake, LOL).

College ring I got green, as our school colors were green and yellow, and I was on Crew and wanted to show spirit (to whom I'm not sure, as I got the ring for my pinky and it was tiny). Had crossed oars on it and everything. :)

But I see nothing wrong with just choosing a color, if that's what she wants.

Editing to mention....the problem with choosing a color that you like is that tastes tend to change. I know color tastes sure do, I loved purple in HS, adored bright orange in college, and now I like 'em all. So a choice based on birthstone or school colors is something that is forever (not totally true, as my college decided to change its colors 10 years after I was graduated), while a stone choice based on current fave color might not last beyond frosh year of college.

They may mean little in your universe, but to a lot of the rest of us they mean a lot. I can count on one hand the number of things that my Father bought me, rather than my parents bought for me. My class ring is one of those. So yea it means a lot to me.

My mother tried to force me to let her buy me a class ring in HS, but I just refused. I knew they didn't have the money, but she was convinced that I "needed" one. I still don't wear jewelry (other than my engagement/wedding rings).

Our school colors were blue & silver. I remember most people having a blue stone. My best friend got an opal-- she just really liked them.

Mine is sapphire because I LOVE sapphires and it happens to be my birthstone.

My school colors were red and black.

I went with the school colors, it was what most everyone did back in the dark ages. :lmao: My daughter's HS class seem to go more toward the birthstones. She has both since her birthstone is Emerald and her school color is also green.

Our colors were blue and gold, and everyone got blue stones. I didn't get one.

I think that if everyone at the school got school colors, and your child didn't like the school colors, I might get her a more traditional ring, possibly with an inscription.

My mother's godmother handed down her class ring to me. It was all gold. I wore it A LOT because it was beautiful, but not obviously a class ring.

I got pink because it was the "optional" October birthstone, since like PP said they weren't going to give me opal since it's too soft. I like pink though.

My brother got black onyx because he was a metal head and metal heads like black.

I hate my birthstone and didn't particularly like my school color(s). I chose an onyx (black) stone for my ring because that was what I wanted.
