Hi. DD21's Dr just said she has an stomach ulcer, and she has been in pain since April and can't get a scope done till the middle of Aug. What can she take now, she is not eating much because she is scared she would be sick, can't travel far, can't stand the pain at work and this is all causing stress ,that it doesn't help ulcers either.

Well, she can try some of the over the counter remedies, but to be honest I found that I needed to get something prescribed by the doctor to get some real relief (I have a peptic ulcer and Crohn's Disease). Didn't the doctor give her something for the pain when he diagnosed her? If not, then get an urgent request for a gastroenterologist (sp?) if you are dealing with your family doctor or go back to your family doctor if you're dealing with a specialist.

She shouldn't take anything the day of the scope (they need to see the interior lining and most things that help would be coating it), but there is no reason she can't get something while she's waiting.

Until then try Pepto-Bismol and reducing her diet (have her just eat plain rice, then if that sits well add in something else that is very plain and so on) to avoid stressing her system that way. Make sure she eats something though, as not eating will just make her system more acidic and aggravate everything. Even if it is just a handful of soda crackers, eat 3-4 times per day minimum (I basically had to do this for two months - eating a few scoops of white rice or a handful of crackers every 3-4 hours - when the Crohn's got really bad). Avoid coffee, soda, acidic juices, spicy foods, and anything else that bothers her.

Good luck!

I also have a stomach ulcer and when it acts up, I avoid alcohol, chocolate, deep fried food, orange juice (and most juices for that matter) spicy foods and pepsi. I normally just eat carbs, like bread (but watch toasted bread - for some reason, that hurt my belly), drink milk so as to nutralize the acid in my stomach and take acid reducers, which you can find at the drug store. I use the store brand, over the counter, but you can get a Rx from your doc as well for something a little stronger.
Make sure she don't take anything containing Ibrupropin (sp) as that ingredient in pills is a guaranteed stomach irratator.
Sorry about the sp errors - writing this in a rush. Good luck!

You can also try aloe juice - you get it in health food stores. It can be very soothing.
And she should try not to have an empty stomach as that can make you feel worse. Eat little bits of things that don't bother as much. For me pasta with no sauce worked and yogurt and bananas were pretty good. Each person will be a little different so she should experiment with small amounts. Just avoid juice, coffee, carbonation and anything spicy or acidic (tomatoes for example)
I was diagnosed with an ulcer a week before a trip to Italy so I know how sucky it can be.

Newfiescotian covered this week .... I have GERD and am on Nexium to control this, but Newfiescotian covered the basics. Avoid some foods (as listed), but don't avoid all foods ... you need something for the stomach acid to work on!

gaviscon is also good. creates a foam barrier.

Get tested for H-Pylori. simple blood test. That's what it was for me. Put me on antibiotics for a week. Never looked back.
Although the antibiotics were hard to take in themselves.
good luck

Since it is urgent would it not be better to bring this up with your GP rather than an internet Disney forum...jus sayin;)

I agree with previous post, get back to see a doc asap, there are a number of prescription meds that will help until you get scoped. Also avoid milk, it may make things feel better for the present, milk requires acid to break it down, so therefore it stimulates acid production
